The Short family packed their bags and moved back to South Africa after 10 years in London
JOHANNESBURG After 10 years in London, the Short family packed their bags and moved back to South Africa, part of what experts say is a growing trend of white expatriates returning home.
"London was very good to us but it was never home," said Julie Short, who met her husband Wallis in the British capital, where their two young daughters were born.
The couple were among the estimated 800,000 white South Africans who moved overseas, mainly to Britain, Australia and New Zealand, between 1991 and 2001, according to census data.
The exodus amounted to about 15 percent of South Africa's white population. Some fled fearing the often gratuitously violent crime that erupted across the nation during the mid-1990s. Nearly 27,000 people were killed in 1995, the year after Nelson Mandela became president.
Others feared that in the new post-apartheid South Africa, they could be passed over for jobs or business opportunities as the government embarked on a programme of black economic empowerment.
But now the exodus appears to be slowing -- and even reversing.
Census figures show the white population is at 4.5 million, the highest level since 1991.

Move back to a country where the locals want to kill you based on the color of your skin. What a great idea.
South African whites have a First World standard of living. They amount to 10% of the population, down from 15% in 1990 and 20% in 1960.
I guess they have to decide whether to move back to a country where blacks do not want them or to stay in a country where Muslims don’t want them.
That was my reaction - You want to move BACK? I fully expect a future article describing them fleeing to another First World country.
Neither decision inspires confidence. I guess “home” has some meaning.
Well they were living in London and they can probably see where that’s going. At least they can defend themselves in S. Africa
The truth is that immigration laws in their new countries don’t make them very welcome or allow them to stay for long. Being more law-abiding than cultures that produce millions of illegals, they go back home as ordered.
“At least they can defend themselves in S. Africa”
And they will need to defend themselves as brutal carjackings, home invasions etc have murdered thousands of whites, especially Boer farmers, since 1994.
I seriously doubt that many South Africans that go to New Zealand, Australia, Canada, or the U.S. will ever go back to S.A. All one has to do is look what came of the formerly first world nation of Rhodesia to see where South Africa will end up.
Now, I can see South Africans not wanting to remain in the U.K., but there are other places they can go.

Even white ANC supporters won’t go back because “It is too dangerous.”
