Thanks for your personal account. I was unaware of this. Back then West Germany had a large and influential Green Party that took part in the anti-American protest against Germany getting missiles from us that would be pointed at Russia. Kind of ironic they never protested against the pollution done by the East Germans.
Greenies were communist dupes even back then.
Exactly. If they ever did whine before reunification, I never heard of it.
I think part of the problem was the coal they used. Since not much was upgraded post-WWII many, many apartment buildings still used coal. Coal that was dropped off in front of the apt building for residents to shovel in.
And the coal itself was this soft, nasty stuff that would clog your breathing passages. In the winter time even for those of us that would go over to East Berlin for just a few hours, would return to West Berlin blowing huge chunks of black, congealed coal particles out of our noses. I have no idea how folks lived like that full-time.
