Senator seeks ban on the Apple app that lets anyone make a fake driving licence

A US Senator has made an appeal to Apple to ban an app that would allow anyone to create a fake drivers licence.

Calling the app a threat to ‘national security,’ Sen Bob Casey of Philadelphia has written a public letter to Apple calling for a ban on the app ‘License’.

Allowing people to paste a photo into a template for a driver’s license from any US state, the app would facilitate identity theft, according to the Senator.

'By downloading "License", anyone with an iPhone or iPad can easily manufacture a fake driver's license by taking a photo and inserting it into one of fifty state driver's licenses' templates,’ he wrote to new Apple CEO Tim Cook.

‘Users then have a high quality image resembling an actual driver's license which they can easily print, laminate, and use for any number of illegal and fraudulent activities.’

Some of these activities include identity theft, creating a new identity, or underage youth drinking and purchasing tobacco.

‘I believe this application poses a threat to public safety and national security,’

‘I request that you remove it from the App Store immediately.’

‘National security systems depend on the trustworthiness of driver’s licenses,’ he added.

‘Yet with a counterfeit licence created by this app, a terrorist could bypass identity verification by the Transportation Security Administration or even apply for a passport.’

‘Applications shouldn’t facilitate lawbreaking, which is exactly what this app does,’ Casey wrote.

‘Apple should shut it down immediately.’ The situation harks back to a similar incident in 2007 when Walmart banned a version of the Superbad DVD that included a fake McLovin driver’s licence.

[ Punish those using fake IDs not those capable of making them. I work on photoshop for several hours every day and could create a fake ID anytime I wish. Should photoshop be outlawed? ]

Yes it should along with laminating machines and photocopiers.....

And guns should be banned too because they are almost always involved in a crime...

And copper pipe too cause you can make a still and or meth lab using it....

I call BS that you could “apply for a passport” with a fake driver’s license. I suppose, strictly speaking, you can indeed apply, but there should be NFW a fake driver’s license is eventually accepted during the process.

In most states a DL made off of a computer wouldn't work. The cards are plastic and have certain other anti-counterfeit measures built in. Simply laminating the thing would not work. Unless the person has some sophisticated way to make a plastic card and transfer the images to it, they wouldn't get away with it. If stopped by a cop even that wouldn't work, as soon as the cop ran it though the computer in his car the person would be busted.

This whole thing is BS and typical of the government trying to interfere in people's lives.

The only thing such an app might work for is to allow a person to make fake id for getting cigarrettes or booze underage.. well given they are such anti-smoking nazis, perhaps thats the crux of why they are crusading against it...

That horse left the barn a long time ago. Paladin Press has a whole series of books on how to make fake ID. This Apple app is just one more addition to the long list of methods.
