Holder Signals Tough Review of New State Laws on Voting

AUSTIN, Tex. — Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Tuesday entered the turbulent political waters of voting rights, signaling that the Justice Department would be aggressive in reviewing new voting laws that civil rights advocates say will dampen minority participation in next year’s elections. Declaring in a speech that protecting ballot access for all eligible voters “must be viewed not only as a legal issue but as a moral imperative,” Mr. Holder urged Americans to “call on our political parties to resist the temptation to suppress certain votes in the hope of attaining electoral success and, instead, achieve success by appealing to more voters.”

The speech by Mr. Holder could inflame a smoldering partisan dispute over race and ballot access as the 2012 campaign cycle intensifies. It comes as the Justice Department’s civil rights division is scrutinizing a series of new state voting laws that were enacted — largely by Republican officials — in the name of fighting fraud.

Holder and the JustUs Department have declared war on us. They're now going after the most de minimis voting standards because they know they can't win without fraud.

“All eligible citizens can and should be automatically registered to vote,”

How are we supposed to VERIFY that “eligible” part, WITHOUT VOTER I.D.????

Just a question, but shouldn’t the role of an Executive FEDERAL Justice Department be to evaluate how effective FEDERAL LAW is being EXECUTED?

Democrats would lose twice as many elections as they lose now if they couldn’t cheat. They know it, we know it, but the Republicans don’t have the balls to say it.

Holder just wants to redirect attention away from his complete involvement in Fast and Furious.

the election process is so rigged that voting in this country is a joke. Apparently Holder and company like it that way.

Hard to “appeal to more voters” when those voters we most need to pry away from the Democrats are from people who are DEAD!

‘but as a moral imperative’

Exactly. That’s how these people govern, as an ideologically based religion, not by law or reason. Pure cultists.

Total BS. Holder is a criminal of the first degree and deserves imprisonment for life. Imagine trying to cash a check or get on an airplane without a photo id, but hey, for the most important duty of every American citizen, voting, no photo is necessary. The ghetto trash some call an AG, is really looking to maximize voter fraud for the demrats.

My understanding is as follows (legal scholars, please feel free to correct me): voting in America is not an unlimited constitutional right: it is also a privilege of citizenship and can be withdrawn for cause at the state level (e.g. - for felony convictions, intellectual and developmental disabilities, or conditions of guardianship or conservatorship).

Further, the demand for proof of local residency and citizenship as a condition of exercising one's franchise has not widely been taken to be an unreasonable impediment to such an exercise, as it serves to protect the democratic process by excluding those with no such current legal right, those who offer false documentation, or those with multiple residences.

Even Federal law (The Voting Rights Act) did not go so far as to deny states their preeminence in determining minimum qualifications, nor could it, given the clear language of the 10th Amendment.

I believe Holder has stated that voter laws were not put into place to voter’s rights. That was his justification for dropping the charges against the New Black Panthers. He is only interested in working toward minority to majority, not actually upholding the Laws of our Land.

He needs to be in jail yesterday.
