a teen-ager sent or received 11 text messages in 11 minutes before an accident

Together with the mountains of data on teen driving accidents which existed long before cell phones or text messaging even existed, this is more of an argument for banning teen driving than an argument for banning cell phone use while driving.

And no one is going to ban teen driving. Cell phones, for whatever reason, aggravate other drivers more than the thousands of other reasons that can be blamed for poor driving.

Seems the phone company could just turn the texting off when the phone is roaming and that would be that.

Isn’t there something about establishing postal roads? Maybe “establish” means more than “build and maintain” In any case, you have no obligation to always drive on the right, e.g. on one-way roads. (Or if you’re President and you shut the whole thing down so you can drive to a barber and get your hair done, with no other traffic on the road for miles in every direction.)

Courts have already ruled that phone service falls under the interstate commerce clause. You need a new one here. Do you recall the break up of maw bell. And/or the celling of the cellular phone spectrum and the tower zones. All happened under the commerce clause.

That would not be the problem, using the phone while driving would automatically put you a fault, someone hits you in the rear while you are driving, they get killed you go to jail. Think about it.

Most drivers are quite capable of talking and driving at the same time, especially using headsets.

That's only because the rest of us have to watch out for you...you aren't even aware of the many times we dodge your lousey driving to avoid accidents you would have caused.

The islamic communist puppet’s regime doesn’t want Americans communicating while they are in their cars. They don’t want us moving, and knowing, if they are doing anything against us while we are able to move, hide, gather, or transport information or arms to each other. Some have even said that they won’t even be able to be in their cars calling, even while stopped or parked with the engine turned off.

>The statistics are that 28% of all accidents are caused by texting/cell phone usage.<

So why are automobile accidents down overall?

I have absolutely no problem with making texting while driving illegal. However, when these government nannystaters allow built-in cell phone use, but not bluetooth headsets, my bull$hit meter goes off big time.

So, why not put your money where your mouth is. No talking to your kid in the backseat and absolutely no conversations with your adult passengers while you drive. While we’re at it, you better not mess with that radio, either. No eating, no drinking and especially no smoking behind that wheel. We don’t want to do anything that might put the lives of others at risk.

Come to think of it, simply DRIVING might put the lives of others at risk. Hey, I think I see a new goal for the NTSB!

I can drive, talk on the phone and watch for cops

What you aren't doing is being aware of the rest of us drivers dodging your sloppy driving so that the accidents you would have caused don't happen.

tell that to the next person who has to dodge you because your talking on your cell...but of course you'll never see them...you and others like you are unaware of what's going on around your driving.

Yeah, sometimes I’ll check email

Yeah, I know I saw you doing so when you pulled over the center lane as I was passing, so I had to pull back to avoid you hitting my car and causing an accident...., you never saw me...you were unaware.

You drive a Prius with an Obama sticker don't you? I'll bet you even think your farts don't stink.

I'd bet money even with a Bluetooth in my ear and a Coke in my hand I'm a better driver than you. I've got over a million accident free miles under my belt to prove it.

You're a moron unless you also want to ban talking passengers, radios, eating while driving, scenery, billboards, road signs, other cars, etc.

Fact is driving is inherently dangerous. We pretend everyone can do it with minimal training but everyone knows it's not true. Some people are just too stupid to be let behind the wheel, yet they all have driver's licenses. The problem is we don't take the driving privilege seriously enough.

And of the over million miles accident free miles how many of those were prevented by 'other' drivers watching out for idiots like you using cellphones...who haven't a clue the danger you put other drivers and their passangers in, let alone the many accidents WE prevented by dodging your sorry butts.

unless you also want to ban talking passengers, radios, eating while driving, scenery, billboards, road signs, other cars, etc.

But your interaction with these things is within your frame of reference, your physical coordinates as it were. When you are talking on the telephone, you are interacting with someone that is not in your physical frame of reference. That could explain why "hands Free" makes no difference, and is just as dangerous.

I'm not saying this is the reason, but it could be, and it is what distinguishes the telephone from everything else you interact with while in your vehicle.

Just something to think about....

So, are you in favor of this NTSB request to ban all cell-phone use outright?

Thank goodness I live in a state that has already said they don’t intend to “answer this call from the Feds.”

“The statistics are that 28% of all accidents are caused by texting/cell phone usage”

I call Bullshtuff.

Accident rates have been dropping for years. Nearly everyone has a cell phone, yet accident rates haven’t gone up.

No need for this stupidity. Texting is already illegal (and really stupid to do while driving anyways) but hands free cell use is not a huge deal.

Ummm, next to none. Most of them were accumulated before cell phones existed. I’m a very defensive driver which explains the accident free miles. I also rode a motorcycle as my sole transportation for a number of years. You either acquire excellent situational awareness on a motorcycle in heavy traffic or you become road kill.

Aaaah, why do I bother. You’re obviously an idiot with issues.

The texting part I agree with...and as for the driver in an animated conversation on their cell phone requiring the use of both hands to express their feelings...while they are accelerating...and passing me on the right...at least allow me the capability to launch a SSM at them. And maybe include the ones reading a book or newspaper or applying makeup to be included. Abuse of rights should have consequences.

We had this come up the other day. There were 4 of us in the car and we were all talking. I said, what’s the difference if someone has a bluetooth vs. 4 people in the car talking? Texting is another issue. That takes 2 hands off the wheel and your eyes off the road. Absolutely stupid behavior that I do agree should be banned. Bluetooth? No. And cellphones? Not in my opinion, but I’m paying attention to my driving, apparently many people aren’t.
