Americans face Guantánamo detention after Obama climbdown
The Guardian (UK) ^ | December 15th, 2011 | Chris McGreal

Barack Obama has abandoned a commitment to veto a new security law that allows the military to indefinitely detain without trial American terrorism suspects arrested on US soil who could then be shipped to Guantánamo Bay.

Human rights groups accused the president of deserting his principles and disregarding the long-established principle that the military is not used in domestic policing. The legislation has also been strongly criticised by libertarians on the right angered at the stripping of individual rights for the duration of "a war that appears to have no end".

The law, contained in the defence authorisation bill that funds the US military, effectively extends the battlefield in the "war on terror" to the US and applies the established principle that combatants in any war are subject to military detention.

The legislation's supporters in Congress say it simply codifies existing practice, such as the indefinite detention of alleged terrorists at Guantánamo Bay. But the law's critics describe it as a draconian piece of legislation that extends the reach of detention without trial to include US citizens arrested in their own country.

Let’s think about just how bizarre and incredibly strange this piece of legislation is..

Starting on day 1 of his presidency, Obama, along with Holder, fought tooth and nail to close down GITMO and open our courts to non-US citizen terrorists.

Fast forward to today and what has since transpired - Obama is poised to sign legislation that strips US citizens to access to our court system. Foreign terrorists?? According to Obama, they should have access to our court system.

The man is truly deluded. God help this country.

It will all be done very quietly and with reasonable efficiency.

While Joe Sixpack is chugging down a Pabst, eating Doritos and watching “American Idol”, a few hundred individuals will be detained as they leave work, or as they leave the grocery store, or what have you.

When Joe turns on the TV the following morning, he’ll hear all about how a coordinated effort between the intelligence services, domestic law enforcement, and the military “quashed a nationwide underground terrorist network aimed at overthrowing the US government and imperiling the freedoms we Americans have cherished for generations.”

There may be a few details leaked out, but not much. And later the same day, Joe will go back to his PBR and Doritos, and watch “CSI”, knowing he can sleep well because the terrorists have been rounded up.

The Germans in WW2 had a name for it; Nacht und Nebel (Night and Fog) and one of my favorite Orwellian terms, “Schutzenhaft”......protective custody.

There will be no great hue and cry; after all, it’s only “terrorists”, right?

It helps to understand the current administration if you can develop “doublethink”.

You know, black is white and white is black, 2+2=5, that sort of thing.

If you can master the mental discipline to understand that “truth” has no objective external reality, but is rather an ideological force that is infinitely malleable, then you’ll have no problems comporting yourself in the Brave New World that our Dear Leader is creating (with apologies to Aldous Huxley).

Just remember.....”truth” is what Power says it is; outside of an ideological structure, “truth” does not exist.

I’m being flippant, btw.

And THAT is why I’ve moved from “Republican vs. Democrat” to “Rational vs. Irrational”.

VERY well stated, prescient, and frightening. Completely in-line with my thoughts on the subject as well.

The media is in the tank for the administration, and no one will step up to speak for America while the regime is in control.

A year is a LONG time to wait, and I think the thousands cuts are bleeding faster now. The Marxists have waited 100 years for this, and they know it’s about time for the final cut.

Obama will deliver it before the elections.
