Congress overturns incandescent light bulb ban
The Washington Times ^ | December 16, 2011 | Stephen Dinan

Congressional negotiators struck a deal Thursday that overturns the new rules that were to have banned sales of traditional incandescent light bulbs beginning next year.

That agreement is tucked inside the massive 1,200-page spending bill that funds the government through the rest of this fiscal year, and which both houses of Congress will vote on Friday. Mr. Obama is expected to sign the bill, which heads off a looming government shutdown.

Congressional Republicans dropped almost all of the policy restrictions they tried to attach to the bill, but won inclusion of the light bulb provision, which prevents the Obama administration from carrying through a 2007 law that would have set energy efficiency standards that effectively made the traditional light bulb obsolete.

The bill doesn’t actually amend the 2007 law, but does prohibit the administration from spending any money to carry out the light bulb standards — which amounts to at least a temporary reprieve.

This increasing use of kicking the can down the road by not making things permanent is disturbing.

Why would GE care?

Why make and sell cheap incandescents for a buck when you can sell mercury-poisoned fluorescent for $4.50?

I would not be surprised if GE was BEHIND this in the first place. Everyone was making the cheap bulbs. Very few (like GE) can make the new ones.

It's kind of like Freon (CFC’s)

You make the single best coolant in the world, and the patent is about to expire, so everyone can start making it. This would cost you BILLIONS in profits... so you spend a few millions on ‘green’ environment wacko causes to get your own product banned- and oh look! we make a substitute.

Never mind that the substitute is much more caustic, far more damaging to the ‘environment’, and far less efficient (remember when you used to be able to make ice cubes in your car's air conditioning? - not any more)

So, 200 lightbulbs are saved and we lost the battle against illegal immigration.
What about the enviro-whacko toilets you have to flush five times?
Could have added them into the bill too.

I guess the reporter doesn’t understand the meaning of the term “overturn”. Not surprising either.

Ditto...and I’m still getting my shipments. I must have 50 years of bulbs stored even though I probably won’t last another 30. I was counting on this investment to help fund my retirement.

I am well into replacing all my fluorescent lights with LED systems.

Ban the hated, reviled and toxic fluorescent bulb!

In a twisted sort of way, I was hoping the ban would become reality.

The average big government voter would be confronted with a reminder of his own stupidity - on a regular basis.

“I am well into replacing all my fluorescent lights with LED systems.”

We did that with a recent minor kitchen renovation. The LED fixtures and bulbs were expensive, but they give off great, natural-looking light, and should last a long time.

I like the squiggly bulbs...I get em cheap on sale and they do save me money on electricity...plus beside my guns, my hundreds of pounds of lead, many lbs of various gunpowders and my viles of mercury, I now have another dangerous source of mercury....cool.

I also have some applications that I will only use incandescent bulbs....so I do have a bit of a stock of these...

A German entrepreneur has found a way to get around a European Union ban on bright, incandescent light bulbs. He's selling them as mini-heaters, whose side-effect happens to produce light

I wonder how many others out there have done the same thing? I know my mother is all stocked up. My husband discouraged me from hoarding but NOOOOOOOOOO - I wouldn’t listen to him!

*** Now I have 12 years of 100 watts stored in my garage for no good reason! Grrrr....I hate government! ***

All is not lost for you. There is a bright side [pun intended ;-)]. With all the bulbs you now have you've beat inflation. Even with 100 watt bulbs staying on the shelves you know that prices will still keep going up on them. But not for you.

It's like the 'Forever Stamps' the Post Office started selling when they were $0.37 each, I bought 300 of them. With the minimal amount of mailing I do -- not even one a month now -- they should last me 'forever' also. Heck, I don't even know what a 1st Class Stamp costs today, nor do I care as I'm set.

So just look at it from a cost savings stand point :-)
