Vietnam says an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease has killed 156 people, mostly children, and sickened more than 96,000 through late November.

We have something similar here in the States. It is called Coxsackie Disease. (yes... that is the real name of it)
What is it? My co worker claimed her 1 year old had this. She was very vague and confused when trying to explain it to us.
Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a human syndrome caused by intestinal viruses of the Picornaviridae family. The most common strains causing HFMD are Coxsackie A virus and Enterovirus 71 (EV-71).[1] HFMD usually affects infants and children, and is quite common. It is moderately contagious and is spread through direct contact with the mucus, saliva, or feces of an infected person. It typically occurs in small epidemics in nursery schools or kindergartens, usually during the summer and autumn months.
The usual incubation period is 3–7 days. It is uncommon in adults, but those with immune deficiencies are very susceptible. HFMD is not to be confused with foot-and-mouth disease (also called hoof-and-mouth disease), which is a disease affecting sheep, cattle, and swine, and which is unrelated to HFMD (but also caused by a member of the Picornaviridae family).

Yikes! My kid had this at one point, she wasn’t even really sick from it. It’s hard to think it could be fatal except maybe in some very already sick person.
It must be SUPER contagious though, because I took her to the emergency room (presenting symptom was a fast moving rash) and the doctor didn’t get within three feet of her.
I thought I’d had every common childhood disease, I’m old enough that I had german measles, measles, scarlet fever, etc. but I’d never heard of this one.
I should add that when she contracted this she was working at the concession stand at Liberty State Park, so she would have had a lot of hand to hand contact with strangers. Real strangers, tourists and the like, from parts unknown.
When my youngest daughter was less than 2, she got it and passed it to me, her sister and my husband. When I first took her to the doctor, he took one look at her mouth and actually pushed his stool back away quickly and said, “That’s Coxsackie.” We were all pretty miserable until we got over it and my mouth and tongue hurt so badly I couldn’t even use a straw. It was awful. We think she picked it up when we were looking at a house to buy (lots of toys all over the place and she picked up something even though I was right there!).

Yeah, that’s what ours did. It was pretty startling! I’d never seen any doctor react that way. I wonder what they do if you’ve got the bubonic plague or ebola or something!
I never knew this was “coxcackie” until this thread. Come to FR and learn new stuff!
