December 16, 2011 12:46pm 1538 Comments Congressmen can't say 'Merry Christmas' in mail

Looks like the PC police have threatened members of the House of Representatives against wishing constituents a "Merry Christmas," if they want to do so in a mailing paid for with tax dollars.

Members who submit official mailings for review by the congressional franking commission that reviews all congressional mail to determine if it can be "franked," or paid for with tax dollars, are being told that no holiday greetings, including "Merry Christmas," can be sent in official mail.

"I called the commission to ask for clarification and was told no 'Merry Christmas.' Also told cannot say 'Happy New Year' but can say 'have a happy new year' – referencing the time period of a new year, but not the holiday," said a Hill staffer who requested anonymity.

Another Hill staffer told The Washington Examiner that "we were given that advice after submitting" a draft mailing.

Members of Congress send millions of dollars worth of mail to constituents every year but there are official rules that govern what can and cannot be said in those mailings. Members are barred, for example, from saying anything that might be construed as advocating their re-election.

But saying "Merry Christmas" is also not permitted, according to a Dec. 12 memo

I’ve got a feeling that even after Americans take back their country and the government, it’s going to take us a VERY long time to flush out the anti-American communists that are now infesting it.

The rules being enforced were enacted by each house of Congress to regulate their use of the Franking Privilege (free mail).

They can change their rules.

One more time, their rules, your tax dollars at work.

That would have been a problem with my ex-congressman whom we fired last year. He was technologically backwards and had very little presence on the internet, so he didn’t use email. My new congressman used to have a computer service and programming company and is quite tech savvy. Why would he need to send out lots of franked snail mail?

Is the problem that they can’t say “Christmas,” or is it that they can’t say “Merry?”

Sort of reminds me of the vampires who can’t look at a cross.

The most galling part of it all is that the very scum who enforce this war on Christmas then try and tell us with a straight face that there’s no war on Christmas.

It offends muslims.

Saying Merry Christmas worse than killing

Since Federal employees are paid by taxpayers to have those holidays off, the only PC thing to do would be to make them work those same holidays.

Elected representatives who “bow” to such an unconstitutional restriction on liberty, should face consequences in the next election.

Of course they can; they just don’t want to.

They can use their own postage to send out Christmas cards like everyone else does.

But their words should not be controlled by the government on their web-sites and in political mailings. I would not obey a ban on putting Merry Christmas on my Congressional web-site.

This goes to show that we need civil rights protections for Christians especially in light of the War of Terror singling us out for harassment and smears and gays targeting us for violent and economic retalliation when we refuse to celebrate sodomy. Christians have been targeted for systematic harassment and exclusion in this country by the Democrats as they did to Blacks before us.

The Christians in Congress are now experiencing a tad of what Christians experience every day in this country. I don’t care who gets mad about it, Christians do need legal protection from institutuional and government harassment and discrimination totally in violation of our constitutional rights.

Do we really want our Congresscritters to send us Christmas Cards that we are paying for?

I don’t even buy cards of my own and I rarely open the ones I receive.

SaraJohnson: "They can use their own postage to send out Christmas cards like everyone else does."

That's the big issue. The taxpayers should not have to pay for the politicos to pervert Christmas to pander for re-election campaign contributions.

Of course, that still allows the Demonrats to send out their boatloads of political hate mail against Christianity, Christian morals, and anything that is decent and patriotic.

So "Happy New Year" cannot appear now in franked Congressional mail. Can anyone remind me which religion "Happy New Year" refers to?
