Truly a wonderful article that sums up why we are all feeling a vague sense of dread these days. America is fundamentally changing, RIGHT NOW. It never seemed possible that we would lose the freedoms our country was supposedly based on, but it appears it is happening in our lifetimes. I’m really not certain if there is any way to reverse the course at this point. The downside of freedom and wealth is that few people pay attention to the trends. They are happy with an SUV, Applebees, and a plasma 46”.

It is only when crackdowns occur that people will notice, and as with all modern dictatorships, it will require at least one full generation to throw off the yoke — unless, of course, modern technology has gamed the odds in a dictator’s benefit, then all bets are off.

If the dictatorship is brought to bear, and if it is even possible to throw off the shackles and bonds, then America will emerge a more freedom-aware place, but this will not happen for a long time. Our children will not quite live to see the re-emergence of freedom.

Where in the world can we go, to claim political asylum, if the last bastion of freedom — America — appears destined to fail?

Your whole post was terrific, especially this excerpt:

If the dictatorship is brought to bear, and if it is even possible to throw off the shackles and bonds, then America will emerge a more freedom-aware place, but this will not happen for a long time. Our children will not quite live to see the re-emergence of freedom.

Where in the world can we go, to claim political asylum, if the last bastion of freedom — America — appears destined to fail?

It is good to see your serious side, and your question is exactly the right one to ask. May G-d help us in 2012 to defeat the Obamanation and to keep the mantle of freedom bequeathed to us by better men.

As much as I enjoy computers and the technological advances of “the digital age”, it is computers (and the power they give to those who “officiate” over us) that have made the likelihood of “Orwellian-style control” easily achievable.

Big Brother (the man) could not watch everyone.
But Big Computer _can_ ....

In previous lives and times, I’ve written about the coming “Great Divide” in North America (a la the “Commonwealth of Independent States). Can’t happen here, right? Right?

At some point Laz there will be a feather that will break the back and then there will be dead politicians and bureaucrats piled in the thousands from coast to coast. I personally will take great pleasure in adding to those piles.

In the case of the homeland Greeks, their long night of bondage lasted from about 346 BC to about 1827, when the Powers of Europe and the Greek independence movement finally threw off the power of the Ottoman Porte.

That is 2173 years of subjugation and humiliation.
