She even thought they spared him because he was a widower with four young children. The reality is we had influential family members on the winning side of the struggle. As it was, he went from being a middle-rank party member to a night watchman for the rest of his life.
That probably saved his life, actually. Being a "middle-rank party member" around Stalin wasn't exactly safe.
