Even if they didn’t know the Heimlich Maneuver, they must have known how to slap him on the back, which might have helped. Sadly, they were probably so afraid that if they tried that they would be arrested for assault that they just stood there like lemons and watched him die.
Political correctness kills...
Uhhh... what?
Does NY have the Good Samaritan law?
Or they were afraid if they were unsuccessful they would be sued by the boy’s family (which will happen anyway). Hard to believe that nobody in a school cafeteria is prepared for such an event, though.
Most educators and public workers are just educated idiots, no common sense whatsoever. It does not take a genius to know that when someone is blue in the face from choking that all you have to do is walk up behind them and pull inward right at the bottom of the rib cage, most times only once, and the obstruction will pop out. One woman said she say the boy was having trouble and one one was helping. Why the hell did she not go over and something? Stand there and do nothing that is the motto for most people today. It is a crying shame that this 9 year old had to die, because he swallowed something to big to go down his throat. IDIOTS
If you read the article, the Dept of Ed report says a parent and an assistant principal attempted the Heimlich maneuver before the boy passed out, and kept trying to revive him until EMS got there, which account differs from the cafeteria worker’s story.
My local paper had just had an article about a teacher who survived choking, but the people who helped her didn’t really know what to do - she lucked out.
All the health curriculum mandates there are - you should teach children and adults a few basic emergency responses: Heimlich, how to stop bleeding, how to call 911.
It is outrageous that no adults present had been trained in choking first aid, in a school cafeteria where choking is highly likely to occur. Someone more radical than I might call this school a "Death Trap". A 30 minute training session & some posters on the wall could have saved this child's life.
Teacher's unions like to boast about their highly educated members, yet they haven't bothered to spend 1/2 hour learning how to save someone who is in what should be MINOR distress.
No doubt EVERY school employee & student has been highly trained to put on a condom, with posters in every room demonstrating the technique. And, with all the Obama pictures, perhaps there is no room left for first aid posters.
