US demands release of CIA spy by Iran

The United States has demanded that Iran release "without delay" a CIA spy who was recently detained in the country and who confessed to being commissioned by the US to infiltrate Iran's intelligence circles.
On December 17, Iran's Intelligence Ministry announced the capture of an American CIA agent of Iranian decent, foiling an intricate US plot to carry out further espionage activities in the Islamic Republic following the capture of an American spy drone in northeastern Iran.
In a televised confession, broadcast on the Iranian television on Sunday night, the US intelligence operative, Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, said he joined the US Army in 2001 and underwent decade-long intelligence training.
He added that he was sent to the US-run Bagram Air Base in eastern Afghanistan and given access to classified intelligence before flying to Tehran.
US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland announced on Monday that the US had requested access to Hekmati through the embassy of Switzerland, which maintains a US interest section in Tehran in the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

I wonder who the genius was who made the decision to send an American citizen first to Bagram and then to Iran. A guy who was in the Marines for goodness sakes? Do they think the Iranians don’t check passports when people enter their country? Do they think the Iranians don’t have any assets in the US to do backround checks on 20 something males with US citizenship who fly ALONE into their country.
Our CIA is being run by a bunch of amateurs it seems. 2 years ago we had the Jordanian suicide bomber who told us he knew where Ayman al Zawarhi was and proceeded to blow up a bunch of our spooks at the base in Afghanistan. Now we lose a drone, leave it there to be picked up by the Iranians and send an amateur spy by himself in Iran. What a joke we are becoming under Obama.

It's BAD with just what we know. Having been in Army intelligence (Yes I know one hell of a oxymoron) what is coming out is less than 1% of what is really going on.
While I agree with most of your reply about CIA, he probably travelled to Iran with an Iranian passport. He supposedly had relatives there that he was visiting.
He was also supposedly working in the area as a civilian contractor for a company based in Qatar that serviced Marines and that’s why he was in Afghanistan.
Time to stop the bleeding Gen. Petraeus.

I don’t believe in “a televised confession, broadcast on the Iranian television”. Over the yrs, that type of confession on IRI tv has been known to have a track-record of having major bogus content, not limited to supposedly CIA agents.

More accurately, I’d say the Iranians, post-Islam, are infamous for having sadistic tendencies, brought to them with the compliments of Arab-Islam conquest & culture. “Assassins” are famous & infamous in post-Islam history of Iran. Mullahs w/ their Islamic Regime & ways have further reinforced & cultivated that kind of approach.
P.S. - Anyone who was born in Iran or who has an Iranian lastname, will be subject to close scrutiny before & when arriving in Iran. Regardless of the passport they may hold. Most countries have a “country of birth” specified in the passport they issue.

Well, you said “infamous”, and I don’t agree.
Persians, pre-Islam, were by no means any more “infamous” for torture than Greeks, Romans were, or the Byzantine empire & their penal system was, as examples. We could google for them too.
Even today, one may consider “rendition” (torture by proxy) extraordinary.
