EPA to unveil limits on mercury and toxic air pollutants from power plants
The Hill ^ | December 20, 2011 | Andrew Restuccia

The Environmental Protection Agency will unveil highly-anticipated regulations on Wednesday aimed at curbing mercury and other toxic air pollutants from power plants.

The agency said Tuesday that EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson will make a “significant Clean Air Act announcement” Wednesday at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC. A source closely following the issue confirmed to The Hill that the agency will unveil the final mercury and air toxics standards.

Jackson will be joined at the event Wednesday afternoon by public health experts and industry representatives, EPA said. But the agency did not name the officials.

The long-delayed final regulations — which would require plant operators to install technology to reduce emissions of mercury and other air toxics — have come under fire from industry groups and Republicans. Opponents say the rules will impose a major burden on the economy, cause power plants to shut down and threaten the reliability of the power grid.

The Obama administration has sought to push back on concerns about electric reliability in recent weeks. The Energy Department recently released a report that said the regulations won’t cause power outages.

Environmental and clean air groups note that the regulations will impose major public health benefits. EPA says the rules will prevent up 17,000 premature deaths, 11,000 heart attacks and 120,000 asthma attacks annually.

EPA had been ordered to complete the rule Friday under a court-ordered deadline, but delayed public rollout until this week.

Read more about the regulations here.

If nobama gets reelected, you can look for some wildeyed EPA ruling that you are not allowed to dispose of those damn pigtail lights or have to pay double the purchase price for “HazMat” disposal through a nobama friend’s companies.

This is about Closing the Coal Fired Plants replacing them with?

And guess what, I spoke to my fireman gnome. He recently had classes on Solar Panel and Hybrid Car fires. Nasty nasty emissions when these happen.

Eons ago a greenie-weenie relative went on rant about Mercury and Coal Fire.

I did some digging for maps of the high concentrations of it. It made no sense, not down streams of powerplants via air or water in vallies etc.

Garbage Dumps or site of former old word manufacturing plants? Perhaps.

IMHO they are using the Mercury boogey man as a ploy for more power.

G_d help us that we are worthy to vote this guy out, I hope the man upstairs thinks we are worth saving or he is out to teach us a lesson...

How many premature deaths from the poor freezing in the dark will this create? I wonder if they bothered to consider such a thing.
