Iowas Rep. Steve King probably has best summarized the Republican presidential field by saying that none of them is perfect. But then the same could have been said of any of our GOP presidents too. Even-gasp-Ronald Reagan had his failings.
While the Democrats made a mistake in believing that Barack Obama was the next JFK, Republicans make the mistake of always looking for the next Reagan.
Ronald Reagan is not here to save us. Sarah Palin will not save us. It wont be Mike Huckabee or any of the other wanna-bes who have figured out how to monetize their narrow popularity into fat TV and radio gigs but could never win the GOP nomination.
Theres only one candidate who stands far and away both the most experienced, the most qualified and the most ready to thoughtfully tackle the countrys problems and set us on the path to the next American Century.
Hes an original, hes exceptional and quite frankly, Republicans are very lucky to have him.
That guy is Newt Gingrich.
And if he has a chance to win, he first has to show us all that he can take a punch and come up smiling.
While Mitt and friends- remember the guys who first invented Obamacare, called Romneycare?- spend their money on Super Pacs pointing out that Newts been married 3 times or that Newt has worked as a lobbyist, lets take a look at what Newt really has done.
It was Newt Gingrich who reformed welfare; its was Newt Gingrich who engineered the GOP takeover of the US House for the first time in 40 years; it was Newt who founded the Opportunity Society; it was Newt who cut capital gains taxes. It was Newt, my Tea Party friends, who shut down the federal government in a showdown with the Democrats rather than compromise. It was Newt who took the fall for other Republicans over the impeachment of President Clinton.
Other than Ronald Reagan, you cant name a political figure who has done as much to concretely advance conservative ideas than Newt Gingrich has.
Dr. Ron Paul? He was writing survivalist newsletters when Newt was writing real-life history by reforming welfare.
Because heres the thing about being president of the United States: You actually have to get things done.
Ask Obama how that works.
And you have to do the right kinds of things.
Ask Mitt Romney how that works.
Compare Newts real world, political accomplishments next to his rivals accomplishments and they appear puny by contrast. Newts a great man surrounded by political pygmies.
Theres a pretty compelling body of evidence that when Newt Gingrich was an elected leader that he did pretty much what he promised hed do and did it in a way consistent with conservative values. In fact, I would call him the greatest Republican leader of the last 50 years after Ronald Reagan.
When the GOP lost seats in 1998, Newt resigned not just as Speaker, but from Congress. As is often the case, Newt took upon himself the mantle of responsibility for failings in the party that were much deeper than one man.
The Republican Party has been much worse for it.
The GOP has nominated and elected lesser people for the presidency and few who equal Gingrichs accomplishments.
There is some evidence that at least the Tea Party sees this judging by Newts ability to sustain support in the Tea Party despite establishment attacks on him.
And thats important because no GOP president will be successful unless they forge a working relationship with the Tea Party.
The Tea Party gives political leaders smart enough to take the hint- such as a truly conservative president- the ability to talk again from the bully pulpit, to use the office of the president to actually accomplish things.
Thats an evolutionary development in our form of government; and the Tea Party can trace its evolution in some sense right back to the Republican Revolution of 1994, led by Newt Gingrich, who tapped into public feelings of government overreach and reckless spending by Clin-trons Version 1.0, all-socialist, all-the-time.
But unlike our current Congress and president, Gingrichs Congress got things done.
So, if the Tea Party wants a president who will actually do things, Newts their guy.
Given the field...Newt is by far the most competent candidate out there.
OK...he is a bit implusive, but he has an idea per minute. And some of them are even good.
But the best thing is that he would destroy Obama in a debate. Can you imagine the teleprompter in chief having to rebutt Newt’s ideas?
I’d pay to see that.
Newt will crystalize the failures of Obama’s socialism, economic destruction, and war on our Constitutional Freedoms.
I’m not liking his immigration policy!
That guy is Newt Gingrich.
Yowza!
Tea partiers, here is your chance to bring back small and fiscally responsible government - elect Newt Gingrich, the one who stands way above the crowd!
Keep spreading the words. Gingrich is the only conservative, experienced, able and a heavy-weight fighter that will deliver us from the evil obumo empirre!
The newt is not a conservative, he will destroy the TEA party.
What a waste.
In addition, a Republican House and Senate would provide the realistic balance. Gingrich would indeed decimate Obama.
I am a member of the Tea Party and very much like Speaker Gingrich. The Tea Party will be stronger than ever in the upcoming general election.
No agreeing or disagreeing... but can you see how him actually shutting down the gov’t for example [twice iirc] to cut spending is what some tea partiers like?
I’m not giving any evaluative assertion regarding his conservatism - just sayin’ I think he’ll cut spending - and the things that go along w/ it like lower taxes and stronger economy. jmo
Please cite legislation the Newt sponsored that is so horribly in conflict with conservatism.
....so you like Romney's or Perry's better?
What is the alternative to Gingrich?
Romney - NO FRIGGIN WAY!
Perry - Would be slaughtered in a debate
Bachmann - Would make outrageous claims that cannot be proven
Santorum - Will attack Obama’s leadership without having any leadership himself.
Paul - Will let Iran get a nuclear weapon.
Huntsman - Will thank Obama for the appointment as ambassador.
Three big elephants in the room will be off the table, though. They are TARP, the federal mandate to force me to purchase (insert item/service here), and Cap/Trade. Obama will say "you supported it, too" anytime Newt brings it up.
I'm not a Romney supporter by any means, but Romney shut Newt down a few months ago in a debate when Newt went after Romney on the Mass mandate. Romney stated he was following Newt's lead on the push for mandates. Newt had no response, and has not gone after him since.
Newt is spot on with the attacks on Obama, but Newt has to deal with the fact that he supported 3 of the biggest recent expansions of government. They are the previously mentioned mandate, TARP, and Medicare D. Obama will gladly remind the people of such.
It seems very clear that Gov. Perry is an actual conservative.
I am not interested in the best debating candidate.
He supported:
1. Cap/Trade
2. TARP
3. Federal mandate to purchase health insurance.
4. Medicare D.
5. Praised the business model of Fannie/Freddie.
The other alternative would be to just sit home, which the left would be happy about. No way will I do that, especially when we have a big chance the get the majority in the Senate back, and if we play it right even the Super majority
From what I have seen, obozo would lose a debate with my 4yr old granddaughter.
...and Newt has recently found his soul. I believe him when he says that his conversion to Catholicism has changed his inner voice. It didn't have to be Catholicism, but at least he chose a religion that asks for personal restraint, respect for women, and doesn't consider throwing rocks at someone (buried to their neck in sand until they die from a broken neck or brain hemorrhage) a valid form of punishment
I am a member of the TEA Party and know Newt is not a conservative. Look up the information about his book being published next year. I do hope I don’t have to vote for him. After being forced to vote for McCain last time I don’t know if I will be forced for an Obama light again.
