SAN DIEGO -- More than 160 guns were off San Diego streets in a matter of hours on Monday as part of an annual program aimed at keeping unwanted guns from falling into the hands of criminals.

The third annual gun-exchange program, sponsored by the United African-American Ministerial Action Council and the San Diego Police Department, took place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at UAAMAC headquarters on Market Street in Lincoln Park.

The event, an effort to curb gun violence, allows citizens to exchange their handguns and standard rifles for $100 gift cards, while $200 cards will be given to those who turn in assault rifles with detachable magazines, according to organizers.

Participants were required to have their firearms unloaded in their vehicles to be removed by a police officer.

El Cajon resident Tim Blake said he never used his gun before so he decided to get rid of it.

Put your guns in the bin to the left and your free speech in the bin on the right... take off all of your clothes and get into the booth... time for Carousel!

Dug up an old rusty firearm in your back yard? Gift Card!

That old piece sitting in back of your safe that isn’t worth the cost to get it fixed? Gift Card!

You know, with a car, $2000, an admission to a Mississippi gun show, and a weeks time driving, a guy could make more than $1000 in gift card profit off of this.

I wish I still had that $50 .22 rifle, coulda made a profit. I sold it for $30. (It turned out that if I put $300 into it, I would have had a $250 gun)

Did one gun look like a pizza slice with some bites taken out of it?

Well what I meant is that it was a great rifle until it fell in the lake.

“Mossberg M44 with the original pinhole sight pack”

I have no idea what that is, but it sounds cool!

There sure are a lot of comments about the guns not being worth a $200 gift card. I think a lot of people failed to read between the lines. The $200 Gift Cards were traded for the guns by the United African-American Ministerial Action Council. When was the last time an African American Minister gave away anything they had to pay for. These anti gun race hustlers work just like their idols Jesse Jackass and Al the alley cat Sharpton. they shake down corporate America for the gift cards and if they were to be turned down they would shout racism after all whitey don’t care about dead youfs in da hood.

Watched the video and seriously question the police chief's comment that there is a direct correlation between taking guns off the street and crime. Would like to know what he bases this on....DC, NY City? And what about the success of concealed carry in reducing crime? Just more anti-gun propaganda.

What person would trade in an $800 “assault” weapon for $200, or a $500 pistol for $100? In my opinion only three types: Liberals who believe the above propaganda and have no knowledge of true value, petty crooks selling someone else’s property for a quick buck, or knowledgeable gun owners looking to unload a POS without potential liability.
