An important fact not included in this discussion is the total number who have received the vaccine. The number of adverse events should be reported as an incidence or rate using this total exposure as a denominator. The total number of adverse events alone is not all that useful.

Establishing causality - if the vaccine caused these adverse events - is not an easy task. Many have existing medical conditions that are counted in these adverse event reports yet there is no qualification of these in the numbers. So before reaching for the pitchforks and torches its good to pause and reflect on the fact that the FDA is a Sword of Damocles of all medical product manufacturers and they love nothing more than threaten a product recall if the data support it. So far Gardasil adverse event reports have yet to approach such measures.

“An important fact not included in this discussion is the total number who have received the vaccine.”

From the CDC...

“As of September 15, 2011, approximately 40 million doses of Gardasil were distributed in the U.S.”

Assuming that most people got the three dose procedure, I guess this means about 12 million people have received the vaccine.

From the CDC...

“[Of the 20,096 adverse events reported to VAERS], 92% were considered to be non-serious, and 8% were considered serious.”

So, figure 1,600 serious adverse events for 12 million people.

Check my math, but I think that's 13 serious adverse events for every 100,000 people.
