WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- House Republicans have agreed to pass a two-month extension of the 2% payroll-tax cut, National Journal reported Thursday, citing Republican and Democratic sources. House Republican leaders insisted earlier Thursday on passing a one-year extension, while President Barack Obama urged them to agree to a two-month deal. Without action by Congress, the payroll tax reverts to 6.2% on Jan. 1 from its current 4.2% rate

Boehner must have seen those people Obama put on stage this afternoon and cried. "Oh, those POOR people! Little Suzy can't afford pizza night with her Dad anymore! It's just so sad!"

Agree. What is going to happen two months from now? If they are unwilling to hold firm now, they just as might well give up the store now. The Dems will use the same tactics two months from now to get the deal they want.

This is the common Rep refrain when confronted with a fight versus concession. The rationale is always that it is not worth the fight this time and we'll fight the next time when the issue really matters. Weakness begets weakness.

Is anyone really surprised?

Has anyone forgotten who's the Republican leadership?

I didn't think so.

Tell me they got Barry to agree on the pipeline?

All the bill does is require Obama to give a decision on the pipeline in 60 days. It does not mandate the pipeline must be started.
Obama could say no, or I have decided not to make a decision at this time.or???-tom

“...The House would originate a new payroll tax bill, a necessary step because the Constitution requires that bills with revenue implications start in the House.

The House ostensibly would agree to this new bill by “unanimous consent,” meaning House Republican leadership would have pre-cleared this with all members. Failing to get unanimous consent would doom it.

The tradeoff from Democrats in the Senate: Majority Leader Harry Reid would appoint conferees so they could have a genuine conference committee between the House and Senate to negotiate differences.

The Republicans’ provision calling for approval of the controversial Keystone pipeline project would remain in the bill.

In addition, the pact would have what was described to Fox News as some “wonky provisions” to help accountants and others who run payrolls get more certainty on the tax code...”

Better not have raised and fought the issue than this quick reversal. This is embarrassing and politically damaging.

Why start this crap and then immediately cave?

I believe they have shed a little light on the subject.

This is not a battle between the marxists and the republicans after all.

This conflict is between the establishment in Washington and the tea party type conservatives.

The establishment has just notified us that they do not like our poking our noses into their business.

I appears that the group of republican congressmen we sent to Washington to do our biding just got slammed.

It appears that the establishment just forced a bad bill down our throats as an object lesson.

The marxists headed by Obama and Reid, the media headed by the main stream and surprisingly Fox, and the career republicans headed by McConnell are the establishment.
