Gingrich to Needle Romney for Timidity on the Economy

Newt Gingrich intends to draw a contrast of his own with Mitt Romney when he buses through Iowa next week in the lead-up to the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses – and he’s going right for Romney’s economic plan and experience.

The Gingrich campaign has spent the past week on the defensive in the face of criticism from Romney himself that the former House speaker is unreliable, from the Romney campaign for not being staunchly conservative, and from a Romney-affiliated “Super PAC” with an onslaught of negative advertising. But after spending the week scolding the Romney camp for negativity in order to educate voters where the “garbage TV ads were coming from,” said a senior official, Gingrich led a series of meetings Thursday night in Arlington to lay out the final sprint before the caucuses.

According to a senior Gingrich adviser, the campaign will “pivot strongly toward a substantive message focused on jobs and economic growth.” The candidate will contrast with the other candidates as he campaigns in the Hawkeye State, but he will most specifically target Romney.

“Mitt Romney's timid economic plan mirror's his style on the stump: like a traveling salesman trying to figure out what the customer might want to hear - which button he should push to make the sale today,” the senior adviser said. “That is the difference between Newt Gingrich's bold conservative leadership and Gov. Romney's timid Massachusetts moderation.”

He explained further, “Voters are skeptical whether Gov. Romney has a bold enough plan and experience on issues, and the skill and tenacity to win the argument against President Obama.”

Campaign officials say that while they were nervous about what polls were showing at the beginning of the week, they believe they’ve halted the backslide and are starting to see resiliency in surveys both nationally and in Iowa.

Interesting note...

Good Newt!
It will show that Mitt is really a liberal pretending to be somewhat of a conservative....you know, when you are in Massachusetts that long, you just cannot get all that liberalism off of your shoes....

More great breaking Newt news tonight..

Three’s Company (19 minutes ago)

The Virginia State Republican Party has announced that Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are the only three GOP contenders to qualify for their March 6 GOP primary ballot.

Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Huntsman & Rick Perry have all failed to qualify under Virginia’s strict standards which require 10,000 overall signatures with at least 400 from each of the state’s 11 Congressional districts. Bachmann, Santorum and Huntsman were expected to come up short of the requirements but Perry’s failure has been noted as a surprise.

Conservatives can now rally around Newt now that the three other conservatives – Michele, Ricky S, and Ricky P are OUT.

Bottom line:

Sadness and darkness on the edge of Rombotland tonight once again.

Newt is no friend of the second amendment.
He was responsible for 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban pass and push by him in congress.
No Newt or Romney for gun owners.

Please stop posting these LIES on multiple threads. This guy is a troublemaker and needs to be banned.

Newt voted AGAINST the bill and it passed in 1994 before the Republicans took over the House.

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) (or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act) was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law in the United States that included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms, so called “assault weapons”.

The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, H.R. 3355, Pub.L. 103-322, was an act of Congress dealing with crime and law enforcement that became law in 1994.

Welcome to FReeRepublic!

I’m supporting Speaker Gingrich and I have no fear of him absconding with our guns. He sees clearly how the underpinnings of this nation have been almost destroyed....and why. He also knows what needs to be done and HOW to do it.

;-)

Ok, Newt was not a speaker and voted nay on the bill. My mistake and I will admit it. It was supported by some republicans at the time and without them it would not pass.
Some of them were big part of 1994 Contract that mostly fail to pass.
Newt is an establishment candidate and Washington insider. His support for global warming, ethanol and other big government program is clear and well known.
Again sorry for my mistake.

Mr. Gingrich is very knowledgeable of how the government works and how is done. He is very smart and highly intelligent person I have to admit. Problem is he had the power as the speaker and what did we get? More spending, more big government more the same. After Bill Clinton left office and R party had control and what did get cut? Size of the federal government? Any department abolished? Newt is all the same establishment who brought us where we are today.
No Romny ever.

Were you even around when Gingrich was speaker? I was and I was paying attention. Many people then turned against him precisely because he was accomplishing so much.

From what I see and hear now, Speaker Gingrich has changed for the better. I can’t wait to see what he will accomplish now. We certainly need some SERIOUS reform. Of all the candidates, I truly believe that he is the ONLY one up to such serious reform.

Go Newt!

;-)

Pray for our nation.

Hi, Newbie. Can you back up your "facts"?.

Like this:

"As U.S. real output grew 13 percent between 2002 and 2006, Massachusetts trailed at 9 percent.
* Manufacturing employment fell 7 percent nationwide those years, but sank 14 percent under Romney, placing Massachusetts 48th among the states.
* Between fall 2003 and autumn 2006, U.S. job growth averaged 5.4 percent, nearly three times Massachusetts' anemic 1.9 percent pace.
* While 8 million Americans over age 16 found work between 2002 and 2006, the number of employed Massachusetts residents actually declined by 8,500 during those years.
"Massachusetts was the only state to have failed to post any gain in its pool of employed residents," professors Sum and McLaughlin concluded.
In an April 2003 meeting with the Massachusetts congressional delegation in Washington, Romney failed to endorse President Bush's $726 billion tax-cut proposal."

[Cato Institute annual Fiscal Policy Report Card - America's Governors, 2004.]

Milt Romney – the Magic RINO:
"I'm not running as the Republican view
or a continuation of Republican values.
That's not what brings me to the race.

(Romney Video, accessed 9/19/07)

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party
over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged
to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.
Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates
wouldn’t make any sense at all.""

Romney is the same as Obama and will never be elected president. Romney has about 20% support for last 6 years and going nowhere. He has money, some organization and support from some establishment and elite in R party.
Newt is competing for same money and support with him. Newt has no organization and may get some money. He talks a good game always did. He will flip flap as Romney, supports big government like ethanol, global warming and his stand on Obamacare will not help him.

Yes I was. R party had total control for several years and what did get done? Bigger government, more regulations and more spending. Did he change? Most likely he did as people generally do. He is campaigning as the outsider to DC and it will not work. This election will not be about who will vote for who, but who will show to vote. Last time R party put the candidate who was so bad people did not show up.
Newt will not get support behind him to get momentum going.

Actually, Speaker Gingrich has been treated horribly by the insider establishment ...precisely because he worked to implement conservative principles.

Also, Newt has a good bit of support behind him. He is the candidate most likely to work for REAL reform.

I believe you will see his numbers go up again the more his ideas really become known.

Again, welcome to FRepublic.
