GOP: Gingrich, Perry fail to qualify for Virginia primary

RICHMOND, Va. — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry have failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.

The Republican Party of Virginia announced late Friday and early Saturday that Gingrich and Perry fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot. Romney and Paul met that threshold.

State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections.

..."We will closely review the facts and law to determine whether an appeal or challenge is warranted," the statement added. "Governor Perry has the utmost respect for the strong place Virginia holds in our nation's economic and military strength and in American history. He will continue to work hard to build strong support in Virginia and earn the trust of conservative-minded voters there."....

Absolutely ridiculous.

Victory in the Virginia primary now means practically nothing. What a shame.

Earlier: Bachmann, Santorum and Huntsman miss Virginia primary deadline......"Four Republican presidential candidates — former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Rep. Ron Paul — submitted petitions Thursday in time to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman did not submit signatures with Virginia's State Board of Elections by Thursday's 5 p.m. deadline and will not be on the primary ballot.

The candidates who submitted the required signatures must clear another hurdle. The Republican Party of Virginia has until Tuesday to certify which candidates qualify."....

Va is heartless.

Ha! Good one.

It appears that having run before has helped Romney and Paul -- though Gingrich was announced earliest and lives in McLean, VA.

Odd bit of news isn’t it?

Do you suppose people may wake up to this sham? and see that Perry is a serious threat to the status quo?

What is fact and fiction here? I’m like hearing that he is going to be in the primary, and then that he isn’t. What is true?

....Perry is a serious threat to the status quo..

That is a true and serious consideration for the ruling class. Perry wants to go where they live and rip up the regulations, litigation, agencies and send them packing for home 6 months out of the year. You can't expect that to go down well.

But apparently doesn’t care enough to actually get on the ballot.

This is amateurish. Thank goodness Cain’s not in the race anymore or we might have had to vote for an actual conservative who was prepared.

What is fact and fiction here?

Perry and Gingrich filed signature petitions but upon review, their petitions failed to meet VA Republican Party's approval.

Apparently, Santorum, Huntsman and Bachmann never tried to get the required 10,000 signatures (with 400 needed from each of Va's 11 congressional districts).

Romney, Paul and Obama all are "legit" to run. Since no one is challenging Obama on the Dem ticket, there will be no Democratic Party Primary in VA.

In many states all you need to do is file and write a check.

Screw them....

I think if Newt wins SC, it’s over any way.

The man makes sense to me. He has a clear consise plan on everything. He’s not afraid to campaign in every community in the country, before the NAACP etc etc, something none of the other candidates boast will do.

He is not afraid of his own party. Hes not afraid of the Ann Coulters, Mark Steyn and other misguided amongst us who are stuck on stupid in the past.

Newt’s moment is now...Any way who listens to him for five minutes knows this...
