Gingrich, Perry fail to make Va. ballot

(AP)WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.

"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10K signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.

Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.

State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.

Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

So I’m kidding myself now? About what? I’m not the one claiming to know the future.

Looks like Romney is going to be the guy this year and it looks like they’re all in on it.

Agreed. The real title should be ‘GOP/MSM dictate vote for Romney or nutcase Paul in the primary.’

So much for their competency. Getting very hard to vote for anyone in this field. Maybe Sarah should jump in.

Reagan was unable to get on the ballot in NY and PA in 1976. These things happen, sometimes on purpose. Remember MA changing the rules for special elections and then changing them back again as needed?

Lisa Murkowski and (much earlier, in 76) Jerry Brown showed that successful write-ins can be mounted. Perry and Gingrich cannot be that hard to spell.

I really don’t get Perry not making it though I thought he was oozing money

*******************

OOPS

Does that help in understanding why Perry didn't make the cut? Perry turned in 11911 signatures or 1911 over the number needed to qualify. Apparently they didn't do a very good job of checking the signatures to make sure they met the criteria and thus failed to have the 10,000 needed.

Yah, we (the voters) are the only ones not in on it.

How can they qualify when those that did it correctly and officially ran and didn’t play games are not even qualifying?

The nominating convention chooses the candidates. If the pre-convention process is a disaster (which seems probable), what does it matter who "qualified"?

Screw the GOP and MSM.I say the tea party should rebel and get a name on the primary ballot before it’s too late.

The tea party should have a primary on line and everyone vote for PERRY, or BACHMANN,or SANTORUM and the winner gets written in on the general election.

"""State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions"""""

So it was VOLUNTEERS validating the work of other VOLUNTEERS????.. So who says the validating Volunteers are correct?????.. Do they miraculously KNOW more than the volunteer petition takers???.. Or perhaps they have a motive!!!

Me thinks this may not be the last of it, it needs to be challenged based on the above VOLUNTEERISM. NEWT/PERRY get on it.

So extend the damn deadline. Who cares? It’s not until March. 2 months isn’t enough time to print ballots? Obama used voter fraud to get on the 2008 Ohio primary ballot, for pete’s sake.

Don’t take posts so personally...I’m just saying that George H.W. and Barbara met with Romney in Texas yesterday...saw the pictures...the NATIONAL REVIEW has come out against Gingrich without endorsing Romney (sure), most GOP members in Congress are reportedly “leaning” to Romney...based on what, his liberal governance of Taxachussetts?

Looks to me like the establishment wants to end Newt’s and Paul’s runs before any more damage is done to their liberal.

Exactly. Newt is not the smartest guy in the room, merely the loudest.

What utter incompetence to not get this done. But we know why, he never thought he’d be a contender so didn’t bother til last minute. Not smart.

Did barack make the ballot?

Apparently so:

The Democratic Party of Virginia certified President Obama’s petitions, which included more than 15,000 signatures, Friday.

In ancient past (read: yesterday), newt and perry supporters said that only serious candidates in the race were the ones who qualified in VA.

I’ll give a pass to Newt. It is not that he lives in VA or something.

Seriously, few VA candidates are not too relevant. If a conservative wins IA (bahmann, santorum or even perry) or strong second, they are strong candidates. Newt can go back plotting his amnesty plan or ally himself with nancy or dede again.
