Mikhail Gorbachev called on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin not to seek a third term as president next year.
He told the Moscow Echo radio: "I would advise Vladimir Putin to leave now. He has had three terms: two as president and one as prime minister. Three terms that is enough."
Mr Gorbachev, 80, has been virulently critical of the elections that took place on December 4. Soon after the poll he said that the results of the poll should be annulled and new elections held due to "numerous falsifications and rigging."
"The results do not reflect the will of the people," Mr Gorbachev said at the time. "Therefore I think they [Russia's leaders] can only take one decision annul the results of the election and hold new ones."
The former president was considering attending the march in central Moscow today, to which thousands ventured. He was, however, unable to appear but passed his greetings to the protestors.
President Dmitry Medvedev this week announced reforms to appease the protestors including resuming elections for regional governors but the changes fell far short of demands for a re-run of the

“The results do not reflect the will of the people,” Mr Gorbachev said...
Hey Gorby, seems like the same applies here.
Misha longs for the days where Soviet elections meant nothing. He is simply jealous of Vlad doing what he would have done in his place.
I wouldn’t be that surprised if Putin gets the boot.
LOL - that’s a funny.
Maybe Virginia can get Gorby as a write in candidate.
M Gorbachev needs to keep silent lest he comes to a bad end.
Amazing how passionate the Russians are for their freedom and determined to be the ones who run their own government instead of letting the same happen as so many idiots are here.
I agree. The 2008 win was the result of endless threats to burn the cities to the ground and threats of mass murder. I know this time around however, Obama will be booted out and then there will be jubilation from every corner of this country. This time, we won’t let our country go.
Neither will I; the last thing that the government officials need is mad Russians storming the Duma and then dragging THEM as well as Putin into the streets and in front of a firing squad consisting of enraged citizenry.
Interesting. He is going around the intent ... it has worked.
It will be interesting what happens now.
I think Putin is more likely to be sacrificed if it came to anyone coming ot a bad end. Mikhail is at no point a threat ot the current government and he is not the one that the Russians are angry with. If Gorbachev were to die after this, there would be no doubt that Putin has been behind it. I don’t think that Putin would survive even being suspected of an assassination and I don’t see how Mikhail is secretly envious of PUtin. He might be, but MIkhail is also not at all stupid about knowing when to throw in the towel and walk away.
What is thallium poisoning. for $500 Alex?
Putin might be harder to extract, but in time he will have to go, via ballot box or bullet. Russians and Eastern Europeans in general are more than capable of pulling the trigger. Look at what they did to the Romanian dictator Nicolae and his wife.
Given that Gorby is not exactly liked (he is possibly the most hated person in Russia today) this call will likely contribute to Putin’s popularity.
Isn’t that Jimmy Carter calling on Obama to resign?
Is Gorby the one with a map of Afghanistan on his forehead?
They have had their trip through Communism/ Socialism. The fing idiots here keep thinking that “They” can make it work “This time”.. it ALWAYS ends in blood shed.. IT never works!!!
The reason people think it is fashionable and ‘cool’ is because they never had the expereince of someone knocking on their door and then dragging family members off into the night, never ot return, all because someone tipped off the police about some fake ‘crime.’ Until the US collapses as a superpower or actual Communism is implemented, quite frankly there is no chance that the reality of it will ever penetrate the thick skulls of the idiots in academia. Quite honestly I for one am perversely hopeful that it does happen, if only so the idoits in universities and HOllywood will finally experiece the reality (any reality really) of the consequences of their support of such a bloody and vicious regime.
