With the Iowa caucuses just days away, the Republican crack-up threatens the future of the Grand Old Party more profoundly than at any time since the GOP's eclipse in 1932. That's bad for America.
The crack-up isn't just Romney-the-smooth versus Gingrich-the-bomb-thrower. Not just House Speaker John Boehner, who keeps making agreements he can't keep, versus House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who keeps making trouble he can't control. And not just the GOP establishment versus the Tea Partiers.
The underlying conflict lies deep in the nature and structure of the Republican Party. And its roots are very old.
As political analyst Michael Lind has noted, today's Tea Party is less an ideological movement than the latest incarnation of an angry white minority -- predominantly Southern, mainly rural, largely male -- that has repeatedly attacked American democracy in order to get its way.
It's no coincidence that the states responsible for putting the most Tea Party representatives in the House are all former members of the Confederacy. Others are from border states with significant Southern populations and Southern ties.

I miss WA state! I was counting the seconds until the race card was played. Short count. Is that their only tactic? Has this writer even visited the deep South? Let me answer that.. he has most definitely not. If the world remains in proper rotation, I hope to be back in the Pac NW in five years.
What a proverbial pantload!!! Reich, you are a mental midget as well!!!
Robert Reich.
Bullsh*t.
Nuff said.
This is the Third Reich article I’ve read this year, and, like the other two, it stinks!

I really don’t know why anyone gives a flying rat’s ass
what that little sawed off Napoleon complex
piece of shit Reich thinks or has to say.
The diminutive Robert Reich laments that the Tea Party is racist at it’s core and that it will harm the Republican party. Not only is Reich’s claim of Tea Party racism a vicious lie but the pretense that the little socialist gives a crap about the state of the Republican party is absurd. The ‘racist’ label the left keeps trying so hard to stick on the Tea Party just won’t work, no matter how adroitly the leftists attempt to explain the intense opposition to the economy-killing, Marxist policies of Barack Obama. Obama’s skin pigment could be as white as snow and his ancestry pure Anglo-Saxon but his socialist ideology is still rotten to the core and it’s implementation is undermining our country. Obama will continue to be strongly opposed by patriots and no amount of leftist name-calling with stop that opposition.
All the young voters I know repeat the same thing—that the Tea Party is a bunch of racists. The Dems have schooled the young voters well. I tell them the Tea Party is the last firewall between the big government spenders of both parties. And they will be paying the price.....
“Robert Reich.”
The Left’s MiniMe!
Yep..old robert stays up late at nite (in a small bed no less) worried about the future of the GOP..
Always half-expect Glenda-the-Good-Witch to show up whenever Bobby Reich hits the tube.
Well,as far as I can tell,he called us all racist.
Reich was an ahole 20 years ago during the Clinton administration and I see he’s still an ahole 20 years later.
The TEA Party is trying to save American democracy, not attack it. I’m a TEA Party guy and I’m in Maine, not a Southern state.
I wish this clueless runt would go back to the Lollipop Guild and leave politics to true patriots, not socialists like himself.
Yes, those traditional old south states of Utah and Wisconsin. The left is delusional. They deny reality and pretend their ideas are somehow popular. They have been rejected in all but the deepest blue states.
Reich, the overused trick of attacking, with lies, your candidate’s opposition is, as we all know, supposed to deflect attention from Bambi and his monstrous record in the Whitehouse.
I cannot think of a more obvious and lame attack on the GOP and our candidates. The only “crack-up” will be the result of Obama losing reelection and his childish outrage when that, thankfully, happens. All the tens of millions of dollars being spent to prop up that pathetic excuse of a President will clearly show the criminal methods and “fixes” being used to keep him in office. There is no possible way for O to win, his term is so pathetic and hateful that nothing, not even the full and expensive support of the media will help. After all, O still has to run on his record.
Obama has nothing to run on, nothing, his “record” speaks for itself and there is no way for him to run from it. The GOP, the Tea Party and the American Christians and Jews who believe in the American dream will prevail. I believe America’s best days lie ahead. God Bless America!
Yawn....Robert who?
That’s just “mean spited”;)
