With the Iowa caucuses just days away, the Republican crack-up threatens the future of the Grand Old Party more profoundly than at any time since the GOP's eclipse in 1932. That's bad for America.
The crack-up isn't just Romney-the-smooth versus Gingrich-the-bomb-thrower. Not just House Speaker John Boehner, who keeps making agreements he can't keep, versus House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who keeps making trouble he can't control. And not just the GOP establishment versus the Tea Partiers.
The underlying conflict lies deep in the nature and structure of the Republican Party. And its roots are very old.
As political analyst Michael Lind has noted, today's Tea Party is less an ideological movement than the latest incarnation of an angry white minority -- predominantly Southern, mainly rural, largely male -- that has repeatedly attacked American democracy in order to get its way.
It's no coincidence that the states responsible for putting the most Tea Party representatives in the House are all former members of the Confederacy. Others are from border states with significant Southern populations and Southern ties.

I miss WA state! I was counting the seconds until the race card was played. Short count. Is that their only tactic? Has this writer even visited the deep South? Let me answer that.. he has most definitely not. If the world remains in proper rotation, I hope to be back in the Pac NW in five years.
What a proverbial pantload!!! Reich, you are a mental midget as well!!!
This is the Third Reich article I’ve read this year, and, like the other two, it stinks!
“...today’s Tea Party is less an ideological movement
than the latest incarnation of an angry white minority-
predominantly Southern, mainly rural, largely male-
hat has repeatedly attacked American democracy...”
“...the states responsible for putting the most Tea Party representatives
in the House are all former members of the Confederacy...”
I really don’t know why anyone gives a flying rat’s ass
what that little sawed off Napoleon complex
piece of shit Reich thinks or has to say.
The diminutive Robert Reich laments that the Tea Party is racist at it’s core and that it will harm the Republican party. Not only is Reich’s claim of Tea Party racism a vicious lie but the pretense that the little socialist gives a crap about the state of the Republican party is absurd. The ‘racist’ label the left keeps trying so hard to stick on the Tea Party just won’t work, no matter how adroitly the leftists attempt to explain the intense opposition to the economy-killing, Marxist policies of Barack Obama. Obama’s skin pigment could be as white as snow and his ancestry pure Anglo-Saxon but his socialist ideology is still rotten to the core and it’s implementation is undermining our country. Obama will continue to be strongly opposed by patriots and no amount of leftist name-calling with stop that opposition.
All the young voters I know repeat the same thing—that the Tea Party is a bunch of racists. The Dems have schooled the young voters well. I tell them the Tea Party is the last firewall between the big government spenders of both parties. And they will be paying the price.....
The Left’s MiniMe!
Yep..old robert stays up late at nite (in a small bed no less) worried about the future of the GOP..
Always half-expect Glenda-the-Good-Witch to show up whenever Bobby Reich hits the tube.
Well,as far as I can tell,he called us all racist.
Reich was an ahole 20 years ago during the Clinton administration and I see he’s still an ahole 20 years later.
The TEA Party is trying to save American democracy, not attack it. I’m a TEA Party guy and I’m in Maine, not a Southern state.
I wish this clueless runt would go back to the Lollipop Guild and leave politics to true patriots, not socialists like himself.
Yes, those traditional old south states of Utah and Wisconsin. The left is delusional. They deny reality and pretend their ideas are somehow popular. They have been rejected in all but the deepest blue states.
Reich, the overused trick of attacking, with lies, your candidate’s opposition is, as we all know, supposed to deflect attention from Bambi and his monstrous record in the Whitehouse.
I cannot think of a more obvious and lame attack on the GOP and our candidates. The only “crack-up” will be the result of Obama losing reelection and his childish outrage when that, thankfully, happens. All the tens of millions of dollars being spent to prop up that pathetic excuse of a President will clearly show the criminal methods and “fixes” being used to keep him in office. There is no possible way for O to win, his term is so pathetic and hateful that nothing, not even the full and expensive support of the media will help. After all, O still has to run on his record.
Obama has nothing to run on, nothing, his “record” speaks for itself and there is no way for him to run from it. The GOP, the Tea Party and the American Christians and Jews who believe in the American dream will prevail. I believe America’s best days lie ahead. God Bless America!
That’s just “mean spited”;)
Reich clearly longs for the "good old days" when his party held the White House, Republicans were minorities in both houses of Congress, and the GOP and played "go along to get along" with the dominant 'Rat majorities.
Holy Crap...just read the article. Reich needs to buy a history book. He even tries to co-opt the Civil Rights act, of which the RATS wouldn’t vote for.
Did you also tell them how the Tea Party has supported Herman Cain? Someone once said that the young are easy marks for totalitarian demagogues because they’re full of idealism for changing the world, and really know less that they think they do.
He wrote that when Michael was Speaker before Gingrich how it was so much better, the Republicans would rollover for the democrats, excuse me I think he actually said “compromise”.
I must add that when Newt was deposed and Hastert became Speaker the rolling over and spending spree began anew.
Robert Reich is embarassed. When it comes time to hang traitors like Reich, we won’t need a rope, but only kit string.
Speaking as from a former confederate state— this bozo is working a personal paradigm he thinks will cause “knee jerk” oh yeahs from people.
Quite simply he is way beyond his limited capacities. The TEA party began on CNBC— he seems to forget that, and the make up is not demographically as he has described it. This is all wishful thinking— especially from a “instructor” who inflated his resume to economics professor, who worked for a president from a confederate state— whose mentor Fulbright voted against the Civil Rights Act. Jackass.
The last few sentences of the article are weird, maybe revealing.
If Americans find this philosophy so abhorrent, would it not benefit the Democrats immensely? It seems Reich is far more interested in stopping this emergent force in the GOP than he is meeting it at the ballot box.
Yes, we're talking about the re-emergence of the Angry White Male...and we brought our wives and sisters with us this time.
I fully expect 75% of the white vote to vote GOP in 2012. Maybe 80%.
I know a couple of "mainstream California Progressives" at work and the only thing they know for sure is that they can NOT vote for anyone now running. Generally they like Obamas' political philosophy, but they cannot abide the overt filth, flaunting of law and general incompetence.
And the race baiting is beginning to bother even them.
Someone should send Commissar Reich a copy of Hayek’s “The Road To Serfdom.” Make sure the copy has large letters so Reich can understand it more easily. No, maybe someone should read it to him.
Congrats. You got there before I did. I guess this little jerk just can't stop being a lying a...hole I. He's now crossed the line into scoundrel territory.
Reich lives so far inside the liberal bubble that anything he says is worthless. He sees and interacts with people who only think like he does.
Robert Reich proves that he’s a genuine lightweight even if he stood 6’5”...he’s a mental midget who is continually wrong about everything political, economic and labor related.
