Second Look: Rick Santorum Attracting Larger Crowds in Iowa

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Rick Santorum isn't going down without a fight. In fact, that fight might be lifting him up.

The Republican presidential candidate who may have logged more miles than any other this year is more likely these days to be grinding it out on the campaign trail than trumpeting the buzz he's stirring among Iowa's conservative voters a week before the Jan. 3 presidential caucuses....

"Rick Santorum could be a real surprise," said former Dallas County GOP Chairman Rob Taylor.

In recent days, Santorum's crowds have started growing as he rallies conservatives with a pit bull's pugnaciousness, and just a touch of anger

While Santorum's profile in Congress as a social-issues crusader bought him entree with influential evangelical conservatives in Iowa, it's his unhesitating attack on liberals that seems to be fueling his rise in internal polls by rival campaigns.

''Let's look at colleges and universities,'' Santorum said in the ballroom of the restored Frank Lloyd Wright Park Inn Hotel on Mason City's town square. ''They've become indoctrination centers for the left. Should we be subsidizing that?''

Santorum tossed out Harvard University's motto, ''Veritas,'' Latin for truth. ''They haven't seen truth at Harvard in 100 years.''

Though a bit prone to hysteria, I like and respect Santorum, and would prefer him over Romney, Newt or Paul.

I still believe Perry is the best of the remaining bunch, but I would be content with a Santorum candidacy.

“He's the only candidate in this race I trust,” said Chuck Laudner, a veteran Iowa GOP operative who introduced Santorum to more than 100 party activists on Santorum’s fourth trip to Mason City. “And he's a fighter.”

A candidate I can trust and a fighter. And also a record as a solid conservative.

That's good enough for me.

More good news. With Romney, Paul, and Gingrich knocking the stuffing out of each other, Iowa could provide some real surprises.

Santorum for President ping. Let me know if you want on or off the list.

Good luck.

So far this is shaping up to be just another “vote for the lessser of two evils” presidential election.

That is how we became so disfunctional that a worthless bag of crap like Barack Obama could float to the top.

I like the anger. One of the knocks on Santorum is that he comes across as "too nice." A little passion could certainly turn that around.

I think Rick is hitting his stride at just the right moment. How great would it be if the voters came out for him...

I’ve been in his corner from the start! I’m hoping and praying for his candidacy.

I would certainly vote for Santorum.

The only problem is that the Democrats had absolutely no trouble booting him from his PA U.S. Senate seat and they know exactly what works against him.

Good.

Santorum really ‘teed me off’ a couple of times at the beginning of the campaign, and I dropped my support for him but I can’t remember the specifics. I CAN remember why I can’t support any of the others. So I’m back in his camp.

I'm from PA and have known Santorum personally since the early 90s, and it wasn't demonRAT magic that earned Rick his big defeat in '06.

The demonRATs ran the table that year and no pubbie could have won in PA that year, but Rick added 10% to his own defeat by not backing Toomey against sphincter in '04.

The TEA party conservatives {before there was a TEA party} wanted Toomey and Santorum and Bush worked against him in the PA pubbie primary.

Toomey only lost by 2 votes per precinct {a little over 24,000 votes} and we all blamed Bush and Santorum.

There was no conservative action for Santorum that year, and Rick usually draws big crowds at sportsman clubs, VFW, Moose, etal, but in '06 he couldn't draw flies.

I had a "Sportsman for Santorum" bumper sticker on my truck, but took it off in '04 and never put it back on.

He pissed his base off, big time, and us rednecks with our guns and Bibles told him to get along with the support of his new found media friends.

I think he's learned his lesson, and could vote for him, but right now I'm backing Newt, we'll see how it shakes out.

Our stealth Conservative candidate is finally resonating with the base.

He is catching fire at just the right time. I have high hopes for his success in IA.

So your saying that the Rats will run a Pro Life candidate talking Conservative values against him for POTUS? I didn't know Obummer was Pro Life blue dog. Santorum lost 1 race out of 4 running as a solid Conservative in a notoriously blue state. Can you point to any other of our candidates who have done that?

To Santorum supporters:

If it looks going into election day like Perry is gaining fastest among Bachmann, Santorum, and Perry, would you consider voting for Perry?

I’m just curious, because it seems to me that conservatives should be trying to maximize the power of their vote by rallying around one of those three candidates. If they all get 9%, they could, together, outpoll everyone else, but end up in 4th, 5th and 6th place which will have little impact.

On the other hand, if one of the three is supported strongly by election day, he or she could pull off quite an upset, to the advantage of all conservative voters.

It’s Santorum’s turn, and should he become the next anti-Romney star, he could ride it out for a win. Sadly, it doesn’t seem like that is going to happen.

So Perry is going to beat himself in the Primaries? That should be a weird turn of events.

If Santorum finished 4th in Iowa, Bachmann should drop out and endorse him. He might well have a good chance in S.C.
