I think the answer is provided in the article:

“”The rise of Boko Haram is largely as a result of incompetence, lack of foresight and insensitivity from the Nigerian state,” Mr Kari said.”

Half the population is muslim...

There’s your answer...
No solution until that fact changes.

And to the rest of you, let’s just go on making lame band jokes. What are a few dead Christians after all...

Read the rest of the article before praising that quote. It is clear that what this (Muslim) commentator meant was that Boko Haram is a legitimate expression of people who are not getting what is rightfully theirs (which, in their minds, is everything belonging to the Christians and absolute power in Nigeria). He says it is necessary to negotiate with the Muslims (about what???). In other words, he was saying the same thing that the Muslims said about 9/11, that the US and the West had been mean to Muslims and owed them big and the Muslims were just extracting justice.

This is ridiculous, of course. The Muslims wanted and got their own state in Nigeria, governed by Islamic law, about 10 years ago, and naturally it is poor and unproductive. But that’s because of Islam. The southern, secular part of the country, where most of the Christians live, is better off and also has more oil, and the wealth received from the development of that oil comes to the country as a whole although naturally also to the people working it as well.

But since Boko Haram means “Western Learning is Evil,” I don’t think there’s much of a negotiating position there. They simply want to crush the Christian population and take over, and because of changes in the Nigerian military (including a growing presence of Pakistani trained Muslims), I think they have a pretty good chance.

Look for Nigeria to break apart down the road, between the Muslim north and the Christian south.
