Have the youth given up on Obama?
By Brad Chase - Special to CNN
In 2008, the youth vote helped sweep Barack Obama into office. Americans 18-29 spread the word on social media, energized fundraising and went to the polls.
In 2012, the youth vote is moving on and throwing those omnipresent Hope bumper stickers and t-shirts in garbage bins.
Not because of apathy. Not because another candidate generates more enthusiasm. Not because of his character. Not because they think voting is pointless. The 18-29 vote is up for grabs in 2012 because youth cant afford cars to put bumper stickers on and those t-shirts are worn out from too many days sitting on the couch unemployed.
The sobering reality: just 55.3 percent of Americans between 16 and 29 have jobs. And earlier this year, Americans student loan debt surpassed credit card debt for the first time ever.

Lazy bastards.
Like many people in our society, many youth are paid to be unemployed.
they’re “occupied”
That’s odd.
When I was a young person, there were all sorts of jobs I did: Construction, landscaping, working in a kitchen, working in a laundry, and working in a warehouse. My friends worked at car washes, painting, even on a farm.
Why don’t we have any of these businesses today? Or why aren’t they hiring? Or maybe there aren’t any young people?
I can’t get a job with my $100,000 Greek Studies degree! Ha ha.
The unions never knew it, I suppose.
Or maybe there are a lot of illegals branching out across our lands.
4th Generation welfare "families" don't have a need for work....they can live off others, deal drugs for supplemental income, and raid Whitey's business or home for "extras".
But... but... they're just doing the jobs Americans don't want, aren't they?
That's one of the MANY costs illegals exact on our country. When I did these jobs, I worked with young people from many different backgrounds, but we all learned what it meant to hold a job, what it took to keep that job, and the satisfaction of earning a paycheck.
Walk by/into any of these jobs today, and you'll find armies of illegals working for $8/hr under the table. Cheaper for the business owner, and a damn good living for an illegal. No worries about taxes, insurance, or anything else for either party.
And really, it's a victimless crime, right? No one gets hurt but society at large.
Junk “factoid” journalism.
No indication if this number is up or down.
Nor reason to doubt that it includes full-time students who wouldn’t necessarily even want jobs.
My soon to be 18 yr olds both have jobs. One of them is considering picking up a second. My college student daughter waits tables while at school and is working two jobs at home during break.
Wonder what the percentages would be if they removed the 16 and 17 year olds from the data.
I totally agree. The 16-29 range seems like a ridiculous one to use. It includes both young adults, who should be working and high school and college students who might or might not want or need jobs.
A 23-29 year old range would seem much more useful to me.
I have no doubt Obamanomics is a disaster, but this statistic is useless.
Bfl
I am a little unhappy with the sample including 16, 17, and high school aged 18 year olds.
I am all for them having a job, but, I don’t think it’s an indication of laziness if they don’t.
We have compulsory education in America, these kids are largely supposed to be full time students.
Also, for the 18-22 crowd, I am all for working, again, but if they are “just” going to college full time I don’t think it is a national emergency.
I’d like to see the stats for the 23-29 year olds; those who aren’t in heavy duty graduate school, med school etc., or who aren’t disabled; they should be working.
Same here when I was a kid I could apply at just about any joint and guaranteed I’d be hired. I went through 20 jobs till I turned 18. Started working at 14. It’s different now. There are two people in my family who have been out of work for a long time, both coming from long term jobs, that cannot find work period. And not for lack of trying. It’s brutal out there. Brother was denied unemployment 3 months ago and is becoming homeless.
Those are the jobs the illegals have taken over as a career.
