Catholics silent in Iowa caucus hype
National Catholic Reporter ^ | 30 Dec 2011 | Tom Carney

..Deacon Dan McGuire, parish administrator at Assumption Parish in Granger, Iowa. “We get involved in politics. That’s obvious. But as a former excluded minority ... we keep faith in our private community. We don’t vocalize it in public.”..

It’s not clear how many Iowa Catholics intend to participate in either caucus, but according to a poll in November for the Register, Catholics represent 21 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers. Catholics represent 19.5 percent of the Iowa population.

...Quiner said he believes Gingrich’s conversion to Catholicism “resonates with a lot of Catholics” despite Gingrich’s three marriages. That conversion was obviously not a political move, he says, because it has never been a political advantage to be a Catholic.

“We respect him for it because it was done out of conviction,” he said. “We have a sense that he has matured, that he’s a different person, is a grandfather and is more ‘other’-oriented.”

For Quiner and many evangelicals and Catholics, abortion is “the No. 1 issue.”

... ...She supports Santorum because she shares his beliefs, specifically “that life begins at conception, about marriage and that God is our creator.” He follows the teachings of the church,” she said, “in defending Israel, about educational choices ... and he defends creationism and favors welfare reform.”

Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines says speaking out at caucus time is not the clergy’s role.

“The idea of the caucuses is to pick individual candidates, and the Catholic church doesn’t endorse individuals,” he said. “We are strongly committed to classical life issues, but also to the life and dignity of the person in such issues as jobs, health care and education. We want people to listen to what we have to say and form their own consciences. It’s up to individuals as adults to choose the right candidates.”

As a Catholic, I'm glad that both of the candidates who are Catholic don't go about with a "Catholic, so vote for me" button (as the article says, it may actually be a liability), but speak as conservatives (Santorum, more than Gingrich, but not as experienced)

Iowa "evagelicals" = 25% of Iowa's population. Iowa Catholics = 23% of Iowa's population. Virtually tied in terms of numbers.

Over 2 dozen threads about the "evangelical" vote in Iowa. Yet this is the first and only thread thus far about the Catholic vote in Iowa.

Hmmm.

“Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines says speaking out at caucus time is not the clergy’s role.”

That’s fine, but I hope individual Catholics will caucus.

Santorum has always had so much passion with the life issue, both politically and in his personal life. He and his wife have walked the walk.

Are you insinuating that Newt and his wives haven't? Callista may have been a husband-stealer, but she sings in the National Cathedral choir.

When I said Santorum and his wife have walked the walk, I was talking about the life issues, and this is what I meant:

“The couple “walks the walk” on social issues like abortion. Mrs. Santorum has given birth eight times — one child died soon after birth, and another has Trisomy 18, a serious and usually fatal genetic disorder.”

excerpt http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/the-case-for-rick-santorum/2011/04/14/AFhEhpdD_blog.html

Santorum is my favorite, and Newt is my 3rd or 4th favorite, btw.

well, as the article says it is a liability for us to follow the faith!

I would be extremely cautious about anything I read in the National Catholic Distorter, a/k/a the Fishwrap.

They endorse female priestesses, married priests, contraception, open communion, homosexual 'marriage', gay lifestyles, and they waver around on abortion. They are Catholic in name only.

Bishop Helmsing of KC condemned the publication way back in the 60s. They haven't changed their ways, and so far as I know no subsequent bishop has lifted the condemnation.
