From the Fab Five to the Three Rs

After 20 years of basketball fame and fortune, Jalen Rose returns home to Detroit to promote school reform and parental choice.

The ride from the airport to the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in Northwest Detroit isn't pleasant. Nearly every other home is boarded up, abandoned, dilapidated...

His school also doesn't have tenure for teachers. "I hate tenure. Tenure allows teachers to put their feet up on the desk and possibly have a job forever. That's why I got turned on to charter schools. It's a business model. Every employee and every teacher will be monitored by performance."...

He also wants to influence parents—empowering them to demand better schools for their kids. The rigid system of school boards telling families where their kids have to go to school perpetuates poverty and a sense of entrapment, he says: "Forty-seven percent of Detroit area parents are functionally illiterate. So that puts their kids at a real handicap. Say my mom is one of those 47%. That doesn't mean that I shouldn't have a fair opportunity for a quality public education. But since my mom is functionally illiterate and we grew up on the west side of Detroit, I'm forced to go to this school that has been a poor-performing school for 30 years."

"There should be parental choice," he says clearly. "Schools should be open. If it's a public education, and the school in your district is poor-performing, you should be able to put your student or kid wherever you want."

Choice could be relatively easily implemented, he says. "I'm a taxpaying citizen, right? So if I'm paying $4,000 worth of taxes and I don't want my kid to go to this school, why can't they give me my $4,000 and allow me to pick where I want to put my kids?"...

Why, because blacks have ironically supported their own political enslavement for generations. While blaming whitey for their own problems. You have a powerful voice to change this so get busy using it mister.

Mr. Rose seems to be going in the right direction. But did he vote for the usurper? & if he did will he vote for him again?

Let’s have you make more slam-dunks like that and fewer slam-drunks, okay Mr. Rose?

Hm? ....More cracks in the citadel of nation's compulsory-attendance, compulsory-funded, socialist school system.

The very idea of socialist-entitlement schooling has lost its legitimacy. Large and seemingly unassailable institutions can lose their legitimacy seemingly overnight. Some examples are the Protestant Reformation, The American Revolution, slavery, or Jim Crow.

The foundations of socialist-entitlement schools has big cracks. Good!

A few more movies like “Waiting for Superman” and socialist schooling will be done.

One of our democrat state senators quit this fall and went to work for Michelle Rhee. He said he was tired of being bullied by self interested agenda driven school interests that put students last.

An important point made in the movie, “Waiting for Superman” is that it isn't the neighborhood that makes the socialist school bad. It is the other way around. Socialist-entitlement schools make the neighborhood bad!

In 1999 I had the opportunity to work in a clinic in my childhood neighborhood of Kensington in Philadelphia. It was heartbreaking to see the moral and spiritual deterioration that was the cause the resultant physical deterioration of the neighborhood.

Why? Why? Why? would God save a nation that does two things:

—Murders its innocent babies in the womb, some who are only seconds away from their first breath?

—Sends its precious children into prison-like godless indoctrination centers? Children who attend these government socialist-entitlement schools must think and reason godlessly just to cooperate in the classroom. How could it be otherwise?

Geeze! No wonder whole cities ( an now even the suburbs) are literally falling apart on every level.

"We didn't cherry pick these kids," says Mr. Rose. "They chose us," he notes, through an oversubscribed lottery system. He adds: "Did you ever see the movie 'Waiting for "Superman"?' The excitement and the joy of families that got in here was similar to that.

Every parent, as well as extended family and friends of the children participating in that ** "oversubscribed" lottery is now part of a voting block set against our nation's socialist K-12 system. Do this a few times over and that adds up to real lobbying power.

Some years ago Utah legislators approved universal vouchers for all Utah children. The NEA came in and spent millions to organize a special election and the voucher law went down in flames. Utah legislators then got smart. They started a **tiny** voucher program for the disabled. Reading problems were considered a "disability" ( Wink! Wink!) Soon some children in various neighborhoods were going to private schools while others were stuck in their compulsory socialist school. In this way, they were able to build political support for school choice.
