Iowa Race Keeps Shifting All the Way to the End

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- With four days left until the Iowa caucuses, Rick Santorum finally has become the flavor of the month in the volatile Republican presidential race here.

......If you haven't figured it out yet, the media have decided that Santorum is the one with the so-called “big mo."

It's been a strange road: The winding course of the GOP primary has tended to follow the collective media narrative that develops (and re-develops) at each turn. Michele Bachmann would surge and then plummet, and she did. The same would happen to Herman Cain. The media projected Rick Perry's rise and fall, and Newt Gingrich's too. And it's been the media that have been expecting a last-minute push by Santorum, and they got their wish -- as they pulled it along.

The problem for Santorum, however, is that even though he shot up to third place in the state behind the statistically tied Ron Paul and Mitt Romney (according to a CNN poll out Wednesday afternoon), it's not all breaking his way. Gingrich and Perry are still considered the two major candidates to the right of Romney -- the ones who can take the fight to South Carolina as the conservative alternative, as they have the money and infrastructure.

And even in Iowa, they are not finished yet. Influential conservative radio host Simon Conway threw his support to Perry late Friday. And Steve Deace, another radio host who is a Christian conservative and who was influential in Mike Huckabee's nine-point victory over Romney here in 2008, has backed the former House speaker....

The above is the key line from this article regardless of who wins Iowa.

I caught a couple minutes of Fox last night. It looked like it was KILLING Carl Cameron to report that a popular radio host was endorsing Gingrich.

That's exactly right. Santorum doesn't have it and won't have enough time to build it to stop Romney. Only Newt and Perry have that chance. Perry's problem is that he has no support outside of Iowa. His polling numbers down state are statistically zero. So the odds against Perry are far greater.

But, Santorum die-hards will not let facts stand in the way.

"Who?"

Sometimes it helps to read the article.

"Steve Deace, another radio host who is a Christian conservative...."

I think he is a local.

Sorry, the poster to whom I responded said “popular” and I mistakenly assumed (yes I know, bad on me) that mean’t that someone outside of Iowa might have heard of him.

Win, lose, or draw in Iowa, both Santorum and Botchmann are so broke they would have to hitchhike to NH.

Neither one has the ability to raise the funds to run a campaign in the big leagues.

If you want a RINO-lite alternative to Mitt Romney, the Newt supporters and Perry supporters need to unite behind one of these candidates.

Given the oversized size of their egos, what do you expect the chances of that actually happening are?

There is one thing that I know for certain...... I am sick of Iowa.

Fortunately, they will soon become completely irrelevant.

I never heard that Carl Cameron had anything to do with the "October surprise" on the Thursday before the election in 2000--I thought Chris Lahane was thought to be behind feeding that to the media (perfectly timed for maximum effect).

Back at the time someone on FR argued that the DUI arrest was so old that anyone snooping around courthouses in Maine looking for dirt on GWB wouldn't have found it, but that it would have been included in the FBI file on George H. W. Bush (since it involved a family member), so it could be that the Democrats knew about it only because of Hillary taking all those FBI files on Republicans to the White House for her operatives to go through.
