Protesters hold signs near Obama vacation rental
Honolulu Star Advertiser ^ | Dec 31, 2011 | Star-Advertiser staff

About 20 people gathered this morning outside the security entrance to President Barack Obama’s vacation compound in Kailua to condemn U.S. wars, occupations, and torture.

The gathering was organized by a local faction of World Can’t Wait, a national activist group against alleged crimes by the U.S. government.

Protestors held up signs for a variety of issues, from supporting Wikileaks to ending U.S. support for Israel. Some motorists honked in support, while a few showed their opposition with hand gestures or shouting out the window.

Police officers in aloha shirts with the Civil Affairs Division monitored the two-hour protest, which ended at noon. Protestors and police said there were no problems.

Liz Rees, a World Can’t Wait organizer, said the group wanted to focus on torture because Obama has not kept his campaign promise to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. She said the group never saw Obama during the protest, but they were able to share their message with members of the public.

“I think it’s important (to raise attention about the issues) wherever the president is, even though he’s on vacation,” she said. “These are serious issues.”

Robert Stiver, 68, of Pearl City, carried a handwritten sign that said, “Stop enabling zionist Israel’s genocidal oppression of the Palestinians.”

He said he has opposed U.S. support of Israel since taking Arabic language and culture courses as a young man in the Army.

Newt’s right , there is no Palestine , never was . It’s fictional . These are Arabs descendants of the nomadic tribes of the lower peninsula . Egypt should give them the Sinai if they want an (Arab) homeland . Not Israel

From their weird perspective they should have turned on Obama a long time ago. Will this ilk still vote for him or will they be too disheartened to? Let's hope too disheartened.

Right...just another "activist group." The Star-Advertiser staff writers are either very ignorant or blatantly dishonest because the WCW is essentially a branch of the communist party working with anarchists and greens.

Couldn’t prove it, but this has the smell of a big one. Arab culture in the Vietnam days? Possible, but...

Doesn't he know that his Jew-hating, Marxist Muslim President is with him in his anti-Semitic hatred?

Great catch!

Reminds me of supposed 'Vietnam Vets" who would have been in grade school at the time - if you do a little subtraction.

I can’t tell you how many nutcases I have known who said they were Vietnam vets with PTSD, and how many leftists believed them. Probably similar to how many people claim to have gone to Woodstock- something like 38 million people ;)

Zero still on vacation? Who can tell?

Best place for him, wishing for more.

Ever notice how little he has been on TV and radio.

Blessed relief.

STHU and stay on vacation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe only a year to go.

If no one has a "Birth Certificate Fraud" sign, the demonstration is an obvious fraud too.
