'Perry's posse' volunteers ride to Iowa as caucuses near

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Ask Patrick Burke why he is spending a frigid, blustery New Year's Day in Iowa trying to help Rick Perry's presidential campaign, and he responds with a sobering answer.

Burke, from the North Texas town of Allen, says he is battling mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer, and isn't sure how long he may live. Fulfilling a civic commitment by participating in a presidential campaign -- specifically Perry's -- is on his "bucket list" of things he wants to accomplish before he dies, Burke says.

The 55-year-old Air Force veteran and former lawman is one of hundreds of volunteers sweeping into Iowa as part of a strike force to help the Texas governor bound out of a prolonged slump in the polls and fashion a desperately needed comeback in Tuesday's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

Burke, despite his failing health, logged 511 miles Saturday on dirt roads and desolate highways to talk to potential caucusgoers. Other volunteers are making similar treks as they fan out across the state to help build Perry's support in the final hours before the caucuses.

.....Renda Ashley, 52, of Harlingen made the trip with her 17-year-old son, Reagan, and 15-year-old daughter, Miranda. Reagan Ashley, who says he wants to enter politics and become governor of Texas, helped raise money for the trip by printing and selling posters declaring support for "Perry Troopers in Strike Force Iowa."

He notes that he won't be able to cast his first ballot in a presidential race until 2016. "Hopefully," he said, "I'll be able to vote for Rick Perry's second term."

Republican presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry (L) greets Lois Lundberg (R), former Orange County GOP Chairwoman, and Tom Fuentes (2nd R) former Orange County GOP Chairman [in the final stages of cancer, left his hospice bed to lead the invocation], at a rally held by the Orange County Republican party at Roger's Gardens on September 8, 2011 in Newport Beach, California.

News reports have Rick Perry making three campaign stops today, ending in Perry, Iowa. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, state Comptroller Susan Combs, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will be on the campaign trail and at a rally for Gov. Perry.

Buzz is that Marcus Luttrell will be there too.

Looks like Iowans who support Perry give him good numbers in “very enthusiastic.”

“Okay” with supporting Gov. Perry, outnumbers the rest of the field at 51%.

Perry has the lowest “would not support” number, at 20%.

With 42% still undecided, who could be persuaded to change, this is good news for Perry.

I really don’t see what his pic from Roger’s Gardens on September 8, 2011 in Newport Beach, California has to do with the article.

When I read about Patrick Burke's health prognosis in the article, it reminded me of Tom Fuentes (former Orange County GOP Chairman living in a CA Hospice) coming to give the invocation at a Perry event in CA (this was shortly after Perry's back fusion surgery).

I heard about the 40%...is that people who haven’t yet a clue, or is it people who are leaning and could change their minds or is it some of both, I wonder.

I’m ok with Rick Perry. He has a few flaws, ( who doesn’t?) but, I think his positives outweigh the negatives - unlike some other candidates.

I think it’s voters who’ve been watching the roller coaster media circus. It’s hard to understand all the issues and know the candidates’ records when you’re whiplashed by so much media drama.

Fox News certainly will not be getting my support after their treatment of Rick Perry in this primary.

It was a good exchange.

Perry explained about their good ground game; again pointed out that the Politico story is an inside the Beltway story and his team is good; re “splitting the evangelical vote” — that he is the one who has the organization going out of Iowa to continue; Iran — all options including surgical strikes — they will not get the bomb — that they want to wipe Israel off map, then Europe and then us — how it was he who mentioned the bank sanctions and that Congress has finally acted on that; re the VA vote — VA has made it so difficult to be on the ballot that his 100,000s of VA supporters — many military installations and veterans who support him cannot; re will Paul and Romney join to call for other candidates to be on the VA ballot? — Perry said he didn’t expect it as they were probably just fine being the only two on the VA primary. He also mentioned his “outsider” status and Santorum’s “earmark” problem — how he, Perry, is the solid, consistent conservative with executive experience from Texas where 1,000,000 jobs were filled while the nation as a whole lost 2,000,000 jobs. That’s off the top of my head. If I find a link to the interview, I will post it here.

Sadly agree. All of the media has been bad, but they have been the worst. I never watch them anymore.
