ROBERT REICH: Get Ready For A Romney-Rubio Ticket
Business Insider ^ | 01/03/2012 | Robert Reichhhhhhhh

Since my New Year’s prediction that Obama would select Hillary Clinton for his running mate in 2012 (and Joe Biden would become Secretary of State), I’ve been swamped by requests for my GOP prediction. Here goes.

You can forget the caucuses and early primaries. Mitt Romney will be the nominee. Republicans may be stupid but the GOP isn’t about to commit suicide. The other candidates are all weighed down by enough baggage to keep a 747 on the tarmac indefinitely.

For his running mate, Romney will choose Marco Rubio, the junior senator from Florida. Why do I say this?

First, Romney will need a right-winger to calm and woo the Republican right. Tea Partiers are attracted to Rubio – an evangelical Christian committed to reducing taxes and shrinking government. Rubio’s meteoric rise in the Florida House before coming to Congress was based on a string of conservative stances on state issues.

Rubio is also a proven campaigner, handily winning four House elections starting in 2002, and then beating popular incumbent Republican governor Charlie Crist in the 2010 Republican primary — with the help of Tea Partiers.

Moreover, he’s only 40, thereby giving the GOP ticket some youthful vigor.

And he’s Hispanic – a Cuban-American – at a time when the GOP needs to court the Hispanic vote.

Here is a very simple test that you can provide to all 'birther' quacking about Rubio's eligibility to be President of this great country... Under United States laws you are either ONE of TWO things. You are either a "NATURAL BORN" citizen or a "NATURALIZED" citizen. There is no 'third way' citizen.

Therefore, either...

#1. Rubio has to be considered a "NATURAL BORN" citizen.

or

#2. Rubio has to be considered a "NATURALIZED" citizen.

To be "NATURALIZED" as a citizen, there are specific rules, declaration filings, and steps that one must take to be legally declared a "NATURALIZED CITIZEN". If you do not take these steps, and you do not have a legal "residency" status, then you are here ILLEGALLY!

SO......if Rubio is not #1, and he has not complied with #2, you have to then believe and declare Rubio as being here ILLEGALLY!

Rubio would be an idiot to align himself with Willard Romney.

Santorum is a die-hard Catholic. Romney is a Morman, which is a cult, anyway you cut it. There are two baptisms that are not recognized by the Catholic Church. Those that have been baptised into the Morman Faith and Jehovah Witnesses. I see no way that Santorum would ever be on the same ticket with this liberal. As a matter of fact take away the fact that he’s a Morman. Why would Santorum want anything to do with a man that has advocated same sex marriage and abortion on demand? Santorum has been the only one in the debates with the guts to call out Romney on his liberal record on social issues in Mass. Of course Romney looks at him and smirks and tells Santorum he doesn’t know what he’s talking about it, but Santorum told the truth about this slimely leftist massacrading as a republican who is trying everything in his power to destroy the conservative wing of the republican party.

True, he can’t be POTUS, but that just means it slides down the line of succession. There is no NBC requirement for the various offices and posts that are in that succession.

The section of the 14th pertaining to citizenship status is one of several. only the part pertaining to the above is dead letter. The remainder of the 14th is as you say “alive and well”. You continue trying to bring oranges into a discussion about apples, this is a favored argumentative ploy of radical leftists, ala Alinsky.

I’m sorry, have I now outed you?

-"...that person could be deemed ineligible to run."

What Section/part/wording of the Constitution would you reference to make this a valid legal claim that the courts would affirm?

The philosophy of this nation is such that the last live American would be sworn in if there was a judge to do so. Command always devolves to the next in line and every single one of us is in that line. Native born following natural born and naturalized following them.

And no! that is not codified in the law.

Santorum/Huntsman

"So he is free to run as VP, but not as P."

You are technically correct (since the Constitution only makes direct reference to eligibility towards "the Office of President"), but (assuming one takes the 'birther' position) what court in the land is going to prevent a sitting Vice President taking over as President due to proper course, once that individual has won a Presidential election as a Vice President. So, it makes your technicality a rather moot point of argument.

I see no way that Santorum would ever be on the same ticket with this liberal. . . .

Santorum campaigned for and traveled with Romney during the primary season of '08. When Romney made an appearance in St. Louis at that time, I went to hear what he had to say, since I wasn't crazy about McCain, and my man Thompson had just dropped out. My reservations about Romney were specifically about the abortion question. I knew of Santorum's reputation for being solidly pro-life, so I pulled him aside and had a conversation with him about Romney's reported "conversion" to the pro-life side. Santorum assured me that he thought it was the real deal. So at that time, at least, Santorum was OK--more than OK--with Romney. Whether Santorum is still OK with Romney--enough so that he would run with him as his VP--I don't know.

There is no such thing as a "Native Born" U.S. citizen.

There is no such legal status as a "Native Born" U.S. Citizen. Look it up. If you find it, let me know.

The term "Native Born Citizen" does not exist in any legal government regulations, or the U.S. Constitution. Also, Congress has never passed any legislation giving legal weight or definition to such a term. This "Native Born" term has only found daylight in opinion and conjecture, and has absolutely no legal regulatory status.

Nice try. Strawman a strength of yours? Again, 1) there is no established case law regarding the question of POTUS eligibility which specifically states that a person born in the U.S. or it’s territories cannot run for POTUS if his or her parents were not born in the U.S., and 2) Obama occupies the office. Perhaps you are you suggesting that the entire U.S. court system has been corrupted?

I didn't find it written into the Constitution, as you well know. I found the following statement at http://www.federalistblog.us/2008/11/natural-born_citizen_defined/:

House Report No. 784, dated June 22, 1874, stated, “The United States have not recognized a ‘double allegiance.’ By our law a citizen is bound to be ‘true and faithful’ alone to our government.”

and,

Whatever might had been the correct understanding of “natural-born citizen” prior to 1866, the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment certainly changes the view because for the first time we have a written national rule declaring who are citizens through birth or naturalization. Who may be born citizens is conditional upon being born “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States – a condition not required under the common law. The legislative definition of “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” was defined as “Not owing allegiance to anybody else,” which is vastly different from local jurisdiction due to physical location alone.

There is more on this issue written on that site.

I think Santorum would jump at the chance to be VP. He’s young, if things went well, he can run for Prez next go ‘round that available.

I don’t think his differences with Romney would be a deal-breaker. Just my take on it on this point.

Romney needs a solid guy like Santorum as his running mate. Even though Rick’s from PA, he’s more like a tapping someone from the South in terms of his style and appeal, balancing the ticket thing.

Maybe that’s one reason why he’d make a good VP to Romney. He IS willing to call him out.
