You are correct and I should have said states rights, for indeed, that is what they were fighting for.

The Radical Republicans in Congress and their actions pre-dated and presaged Lincoln’s executive role.

Nice try.

The Republicans didn't control Congress in the session that preceded Lincoln's election, nor did they in the Congress before that. The Speaker of the House was a Democrat from South Carolina, the Senate President was from a Democrat Kentucky. Both supported slavery.

totally agree and I’;ve said the same over the years.
I’ve always believed that if Stonewall one of my favorites had been around then the outcome would have been different.

Stonewall brought in a version of the light infantry and was a great leader.

so sad and yet so pathetic, even the union Generals especially a certain couple, union papers, Yankees from all walks of life gave praise and respect to Lee and yet you felt the need to come on here and post such drivel.

Also if you do not want to remember him then don’t so why use the “we”

That’s great - they tried to “uphold the constitution” by keeping fellow humans in bondage.

It is disgusting how you people pervert one noble cause for another more bestial one.

Nice try. I try not to argue with “experts”. My family was there and Princeton professors cannot re-write it. Try not to mix up party names with political reality. Sort of like McCain endorsing Romney, whom he hates.k

You believe whatever fiction you wish— the Radical Repubs were the reason Lincoln was elected and on his ticket and platform. You like railroads and oligarchs— that’s who they were.

So you’re all for McCain and Romney? More shining examples of republibull.

A traitor?—what a laugh. Do you know anything about this great American? Try peddling that compost at VMI or Washington & Lee. Some people never really learn the truth, nor understand principles or the times-but it is not their fault but a product of liberal academia and media. One wonders what you would say about Lee’s father or family.

Lincoln was one sick puppy, a sad creature of the railroads and northern oligarchs who owned him, with a knack for oratory. He cared nothing about slavery—only as leverage and later. What he cared about was power. Funny how people trot him out today when pulling another fast one providing political cover. And it is as silly as obamalamadingdong channeling Reagan, as he ignores the Constitution.

See 3/5ths Compromise. That is the political reality created by the Northern power bloc, supported by their later Northern industrial oligarch descendants, which translated into unequal representation. The unequal representation forced the actions of the "selfish and stupid" South, many of whom were opposed to secession and would have delighted in a financial compromise to compensate them for the system of human capital that should have been dealt with earlier in history (see Jefferson)

What "people" and whose "will"? Whose cheating and lying are you talking about? Would that be the political class who had their greedy business interests invested in westward expansion, manifest destiny (to come), native American genocide and puritan progressivism? You know--Massachusetts moderates.

So in that sense, war developed (like all wars) between battling commercial interests, and major differences in Constitutional interpretation and raw political power. When you look at the "winners" the entire country lost-- and some have never forgotten what happened, despite all attempts by the "victors" to rewrite it. Deo Vindice.

better to ignore the handful of trolls.

I’m just surprised it took them so ling to get to this thread and to get their snide remarks in.

If Grant can give respect, If other Generals in the federal army can give respect and if many other soldiers can give respect to Lee back in that day and it was they who did the fighting then one would think some troll on a computer years later could understand about Lee and all the respect he got from the north.

Please. The origins of slave trading is in Boston, a bestial town if there ever was one! The Boston slave traders whose middle men in Africa were tribal chiefs and arabs, branched out with the china clipper ship opium trade. You would be fascinated to learn the family names whose fortunes derive from these origins.

The historical facts are all there for those willing to look, but most unfortunately are informed by the descendants and lackeys of the "victors" who are well positioned with their ignorance.

Here is part of it: The yankee northern industrialists and their "no nothing" nativist supporters specialized and perfected another form of slavery which no Southerner supports any more than the derivational government welfare plantation state preserved and expanded by the Democrat party, Southern and Northern. This is the same Democrat party that screams out "racism" at the drop of the hat. They self righteously cloak themselves in indignation (always in discussions of this sort)while harboring core racism and bigotry, enlisting the help of black political leader/apparatchiks who long ago sold out their culture and people-- with a wink as they continue to wrap our country in chains of perpetual enslavement to the State.

This post Civil War march of progressivism, regardless of party, is how we got to the current presentdent and his Statist, Marxist cronies destroying what is left of the last great hope of freedom in the world.

You want to see the coming real slavery for all of us? Look at the mortgage "adjustment" (using borrowed 1.4 trillion we do not have) enforced by the unconstitutionally appointed Democrat "Czar" of financial "reform" (that would be Cordray from your state- a real piece of work):the redistribution of capital real estate property by our Statist Marxist presentdent. Massive private property seizure, devaluation of real property more frightening than anything this country has ever seen. Cradle to grave obamacare enforced by an irs gestapo and national police. Socialism's true endpoint- theft and enslavement on the stalin model.

Be assured that the same group of "noble cause perverters" (as you call them) are now and will be on the front lines to defeat them in defense of our Constitution.Pray. Deo Vindice.

Key point-- it is many years later of course and the trolls are informed by generations of entrenched political lies, and they then turn around and accuse others of wanting to "go back". A key element in false progressivism is the twisting of the meaning of "progress" (no one wants to "go back to thaaaat" like returning to the Founders is somehow "backward") because of course all "progress" is good.

The concept/belief that the Constitution is outdated and is a "living" document subject to fiat change is part of this. Change that the Constitution provides for by the Amendment process which no progressive wants to follow. That is, they want to circumvent the Constitution- and with the RINOs in Congress they are doing it. Who are the patriots, now? Deo Vindice.

I don’t care about the North versus South issue. The Confederacy did far worse to my Southern ancestors than the North ever did. I wish Southerners would forget the Lost Cause myths long enough to see the abuses and exploitations that ordinary Southerners suffered from the Confederates in their power grab.

The problem was not with people like Lee, Cleburne and the brave reb soldiers. Th big problem was with the foolish and greedy political class who tried to destroy the work of Washington and the other founders in order to set up an empire based on a cornerstone of slavery.

There's a lot of literature on the defects of the secession process. While secession might have been a legitimate expression of the puiblic mood in a few states like South Carolina, in places like Virginia, Georgia and Tennessee it was badly flawed. This contemporary cartoon is a representation of how Virginia was voted out of the Union.
