The gunman, Matthew David Stewart, 37, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police, and remained hospitalized Thursday under guard.

****

Suspect was self-medicating, father says

Stewart’s father described his oldest son as having mental problems and said he was “self-medicating” with marijuana.

“We were concerned for him. But there was just nothing we could do for him. He wouldn’t have anything to do with his mother or his father,” Michael Stewart told the Deseret News Thursday.

He said his 37-year-old son has been estranged from his family for several years.

My sincere appreciation for the update.

I do not have the words (for typing) at this moment for the grief I have. Hope you understand that my heart goes out to every law-enforcement Officer and the Families going through this senselessness generated by this perp. Please if time permits ... Keep me updated, and I will be looking for updates to this thread regarding new posts. Prayers for you (Binger) and your Family members.

One officer dead. 5 hospitalized with wounds.

Damn....just damn! Even with the best training and equipment being a cop is still a dangerous job.

Prayers up for the wounded officers and may Gob bless the one He took home today and give strength to his family.

There was a man shot to death in Bellingham, WA last year by his mentally ill son who was self-medicating with marijuana. We have medical marijuana, here. Some of the proponents of medical marijuana have been pushing marijuana as a substitute to prescribed psychotropic drugs.

"But WTF? A (sounds like) AK-47? and no dead?" There was a magazine article not too long ago about lethality of different weapons in mass shootings. AK's are not all that lethal. They had a relatively low "death per victim" rate. 12 gauge shotgun was the most lethal,,, and by a huge margin. Handguns were also higher than AK. It was a function of the tendency to spray and wound a lot and that AK's are almost always used with non-expanding, non-hunting ammo. A good example is the North Hollywood Shootout. Phillips and Mătăsăreanu fired about 1300 rounds from AKs at the surrounding cops. They wounded 18. No cops died,, only the two bad guys. And not to say an AK isn't awesome. In technical terms, it allowed one man to successfully deal with at least 6 to one odds in _that_ moment.

Our niece's husband has been placed in an induced coma for five days as they extract bone fragments from his brain. Possible brain damage. They removed the bullet from upper chest with no apparent real damage there.

Thanks for you thoughts and prayers. Have not heard how the other four are doing. This is first hand information from my brother in law.

DAMN!

We had a policeman shot in head about 1-2 years ago in Indy.

By God's healing power he DID not die and he is making a recovery, slow but steady.

May God grant the same blessings to this man.

Your niece is a strong lady. Her strength is a blessing to the entire family. May God continue to comfort your niece and the wives of the Officers during this time of trial. Prayer for continuing strength for all of Ogden during this time of trial.

When I asked “Where the heck is Ogden?” I was trying to give a hint that one should inform us of the state when just a city or town is referred to in the title.

Marijuana is beneficial for a number of conditions; I'm not aware of any research that shows that violent psychopathology is one of them.

Yeah, well marijuana maybe beneficial for some conditions, but there are medicinal versions of the drug that can be used without smoking it.

The case in Bellingham, the guy was psychotic and under medical supervision, but decided that it was better to self medicate with marijuana, as the free drug crowd had told him that marijuana would cure what ailed him and make everything ok. He went nuts, and tried to kill his mother and sister. The father tried to stop him and got killed, instead. Marijuana is not a cure for psychosis, violent or otherwise. This man had not been violent before.

Oral administration is harder to titrate, and not appropriate for patients with nausea. Also irrelevant to the cases under discussion, absent evidence that oral cannabis is any better for mental patients than smoked.

What exactly is the "free drug crowd," and where is the evidence that the Bellingham guy was even aware of their views?

Legalizing drugs will cause more problems than we have now.

Ron Paul is actually advocating the same steps to win the support of young people that George Soros uses when he goes into a new country, legalization of drugs and abortion. it’s a ploy to win the hearts and minds of the younger, less serious generation. I’d bet that Ron Paul’s foreign policy isn’t that different than what George Soros would propose, either. It’s odd that a Libertarian would and World Socialist would use the same organizing methods, don’t you think?

The proponents of drug legalization in WA have been pushing the use of marijuana as a substitute for prescription psychotropic drugs. You cannot trust a mentally ill person to know when that substitution is appropriate. Encouraging self medication is a dangerous.

Legalizing drugs will cause more problems than we have now.

Legalizing drugs will reduce or eliminate the problems exacerbated or caused by drug criminalization: the channeling of criminalization-inflated drug profits into criminal hands, the subsequent use of those profits to arm themselves and corrupt law enforcement, and the increased motivation for addicts to commit crimes to pay criminalization-inflated prices for their habits.

I'll bet they both wear pants, too - what of it?

The proponents of drug legalization in WA have been pushing the use of marijuana as a substitute for prescription psychotropic drugs.

Evidence?

You cannot trust a mentally ill person to know when that substitution is appropriate.

That doesn't answer my question: where is the evidence that the Bellingham guy was even aware of their views?
