Fidel Castro says world marching into abyss with shale gas

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said on Thursday the world was on an "inexorable march toward the abyss," which he blamed in part on the discovery and exploitation of vast reserves of so-called "shale gas" around the world.

Shale gas is natural gas locked in rock formations that in the past decade has been found in great abundance around the world and is now considered a top source of future energy.

Castro, 85, wrote in one of his occasional columns published in Cuban state media that "numerous dangers threaten us, but two of them—nuclear war and climate change—are decisive and both are ever further from approaching a solution." …

Shale gas production is criticized in some quarters because it requires extensive "fracking," which uses water, sand and chemicals to fracture the rock where the gas is trapped to allow it to flow out of the well. Fracking, opponents say, contaminates groundwater sources and can cause other problems.

Castro sided with the critics, quoting reports on the negative effects of fracking and research that said shale gas emits more greenhouse gases than gas produced from conventional wells.

"It is sufficient to point out that among the numerous chemical substances injected with the water to extract this gas is found benzene and toluene, which are substances terribly carcinogenic," he wrote.

The information on shale gas was something "no political cadre or sensible person could ignore," he said.

Castro said he was so intent on getting the word out, he had "let the festive days of the old and new year pass by" working on his column. …

"benzene and toluene, which are substances terribly carcinogenic"

I knew benzene was bad but toluene? That's what use to be in Testers glue the favorite of the glueheads of the 60's. Why hasn't the great general come up with some other energy force besides oil? They have had 50 years of isolation to become the paradise of the Caribbean and yet they are not.

Fidel Castro opposes shale gas production because:

(a) he has a Luddite mentality and shale gas is an important new energy source for future economic growth, and

(b) shale gas will decrease demand for the difficult-to-refine heavy oil being produced by his ideological pupil Hugo Chavez.

In other words, Castro has the same views as U.S. socialists, who are trying to destroy the economy.

The left has a problem this year: how do you destroy the economy and get re-elected at the same time?

“The left has a problem this year: how do you destroy the economy and get re-elected at the same time?”

Easy, same way they always get elected - extend the voting franchise to every irresponsible reprobate in existence, then appeal to the basest of human instincts.

Plus, voter fraud.

Not since he started allowing small degrees of capitalism in Cuba. Plus, as being pro-queer became a mandatory position on the left, the Castro regime’s past anti-queer positions made old Fidel less popular with them.

Must be no shale gas reserve in Cuba.

Castro sees his newly started oil drilling not paying off. If the rest of the world continues on the shale gas/fracking bandwagon oil prices will inevitably decline.

First you begin the lies about the “improving jobs numbers” I have heard all day today from govt.controlled radio— numbers based eliminating the people who are no longer looking and taking them out of the calculation.

Problem there is though, that people have no jobs and they KNOW the govt. is lying and so is obama.

"numerous dangers threaten us, but two of them—nuclear war and climate change—

Anyone who equates nuclear war to climate change needs to be locked up in a mental institution. The climate has changed more times then can be counted on this planet. How many nuclear wars have we had ? Did I miss a few ?

The anti-nuclear groups, anti-war groups in US college campuses were funded and supported by the communist regimes in the 60’s and 70’s.

Is it any surprise that they would continue to push the same ideas that would keep the US on a downward spiral in 2012?
