NFL players oppose right-to-work in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS | As Indianapolis prepares to host the Super Bowl next month, the union of professional football players has condemned the push for an Indiana right-to-work law.

The NFL Players Association said in a statement Friday that right-to-work "is a political ploy designed to destroy basic workers' rights."

"It's the wrong priority for Indiana," the NFL players said.

The NFLPA did not threaten to boycott the Super Bowl or take any other direct action should Indiana enact a right-to-work law.

They reminded state lawmakers that success on the football field requires everyone to work together as a team.

"The Super Bowl should be a time to shine in the national spotlight and highlight the hard-working families that make Indiana run instead of launching political attacks on their basic rights," the players said.

Under a right-to-work law, non-union employees at a union workplace do not have to pay for union services they receive.

Supporters claim that policy will bring more jobs to Indiana, while opponents say the record in other states shows right-to-work reduces wages and benefits for all workers.

I don’t believe the final statement is true - non union employees DO have to pay for union benefits they receive.

What right to work means is you don’t have to join a union in order to work at a particular location or trade.

I know a person who worked (in another state that is not right to work) under a provisional employment status. The provision was he would be “voted in” to the union. He was subsequently not “voted in” to the union, and thus lost his job.

You're correct, they're called "agency fee payers", they pay lower union dues and cannot vote in union elections.

The unions call these people "freeloaders" and say they don't pay any dues at all but still get union benifits. The unions are misrepresenting this fact.

Unions have NEVER been known to consider the effects of people who are not currently union members. Anyone not a member of the union is simply a threat to a job being held by a union member. Appeals to policies which would create more jobs for everyone usually falls on deaf ears. Remember that these are the folks who are sometimes willing to risk driving a company out of business in order to exact every last dime in wages FOR THE CURRENT EMPLOYEES.

Do I read this right that pro football millionaires think their fun and games should not be over ridden by real societal considerations? If so these guys show their true colors as unworthy of the patronage that pays them. I like to watch pro football but can do without if confronted with other forced choices.
