Microsoft has been granted a patent for its “avoid ghetto” feature for GPS devices.

A GPS device is used to find shortcuts and avoid traffic, but Microsoft’s patent states that a route can be plotted for pedestrians to avoid an “unsafe neighborhood or being in an open area that is subject to harsh temperatures.”

Created for mobile phones, the technology uses the latest crime statistics and weather data and includes them when calculating a route.

Bad Microsft! Helping people avoid crime-ridden areas is racist!/sarc. Interesting that See-BS equates ghetto with crime. Isn't that racist, itself?

Wouldn’t it be easier to use voter roles and note those areas run by Democrats?

Used a gps to get me from a DC B&B to the Baltimore Airport 5 years ago. Been waiting for this new feature ever since.

Some years ago, I used to be this feature when foreign tourists would come by my building in San Francisco, I just didn't ride with 'em in the car.

This should have a measurable impact on inter-racial crime statistics.

I know people working at a university who are told upon hire NEVER to take the most direct route to work, the area around that highway exit is near Third World. Tragic.

I sure wish I had this feature on my one and only coast to coast drive in 1993. I am absolutely certain it has gotten worse since, New York-Philadelphia-DC-Chicago-St Louis-Dodge City-Grand Canyon-Las Vegas-San Francisco. And stops in between.

The exit at Philadelphia should have been a warning. Wanting to visit the historic buildings, the random exit I chose forced me to make a u-turn and get back on the main highway after about a half-mile or so.

I am most familiar with California, and I can certainly identify the areas in San Francsco I would avoid at night, a couple at ANY time. I am sure there are similar areas in every major and medium-sized cities. Does anyone have a link to any sources that have a complete list?

There's an App for that:

Funny how that works.
In San Francisco, CA, Army Street is now called MLK.
In Stockton, CA, Charter Way is now MLK Blvd.

Most murders, random shootings, car thefts, burglaries, break-ins and muggings happen within 1/4 mile of those sterling streets. I can't explain it, but I avoid those areas like the plague, except for driving along them on my way to somewhere else.

And of course, the White House should automatically be included as a slum area inhabited by....(insert N four letter words here where N is a large number)...

How will they determine which is ‘unsafe.’

My rule of thumb - When bar means something you put on a door and window instead of a place that serves drinks, you’re in the wrong neighborhood.

MLK Blvd

I bet MLK would be thrilled with all those wonderful streets named after him. /s

It's funny how a glass-littered, broken up pavement street became a Blvd overnight. Sounds like a trick to bring the tourists in, never to be seen again.
