Global warming activists like to cite extreme weather as one of the main reasons that we must take firm action on global warming. No hurricane or heat wave passes without a politician or activist claiming it as evidence of the need for a global climate deal, like the one that just got postponed until the end of the decade in Durban, South Africa.
Such claims merit close scrutiny. A 2007 report by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change received considerable media attention. But it was discovered two years later that some of the IPCC reports key claimsfor example, that global warming would cause the immense Himalayan glaciers to disappear by 2035 or halve African crop yields by 2020were based on statements made in appeals by environmentalist organizations and were backed by little or no evidence.
Despite this error, the IPCC has long been a fairly reliable source of sensible and responsible estimates in an otherwise histrionic debate. Unfortunately, sensible estimates are not breaking news. Whereas the IPCC predicts that sea levels will rise by a relatively manageable 7 to 23 inches by the end of the century, news organizations and activists regularly claim that we should expect sea levels to rise by meters.

Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.
PS: Oh, I'm sorry, I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922 , as reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post 89 years ago.
"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.."
--Al Gore, Vice President
All I know is that our warm winter here in Michigan is saving me a bundle on heating costs. However, last winter it got cold early and stayed cold.
High Priest Gore is not amused.
I am not getting my hopes up.
Most people will not believe the truth until they read it the NY Times 3 or 4 times.
The indoctrination has been very thorough. .
It will take the official voice of Liberal Doctrine to undo the imprinting of Global Warming on the minds of the Liberal Masses.
Earth’s rotation slowed by global warming. Lastest dribble coming from a socialist lib at columbia university. If this overpaid fraud had bothered to check and report the truth. He would have found out the earth’s rotation has been slowing for billons of years naturally. The drones that buy into obama’s commie agenda will do or say anything to promote their anti american ideology. The only way to defeat these vermin is to politically destroy them in 2012 and then take the rest of the garbage out of EPA, DOJ to name only a few agencies that have been infested by these commies.
Everybody knows that it is the “irrational conservatives” that “play on people’s fears”, so the only reason they try to scare us with “global warming” is that all their arguments are based on the simple truth which would scare anyone in their right mind.../sarc
Frankly I wouldn’t mind some global warming because the other thing, global freezing, would be hard to overcome. As for ice melting and raising the water level, I think that any 8th grade science student should be able to explain that when water freezes it expands and when it melts it contracts. When you see ice floating in water most of it is under the water and when it melts the level of the drink or whatever doesn’t rise.
Just like if I filled a glass with ice cubes and added water until the ice floats will the glass overflow when the ice melts?
Agreed. It costs a lot less around here to cool a house than warm it. So I use less energy in warm temps than in cold. That would make AGW self-correcting.
Global Warming on Free Republic
I like the sound of that.
That analogy only holds if the world's ice stores were floating in the oceans. Some are, but many are on land. The water from those would tend to raise the oceans levels.
But all water formed from atmosphere so can’t have more water created. It’s all in one form or other.
Thanks for the ping.
