Heavier than usual snowfall and high winds have caused chaos on roads and railways in many areas of Austria.

Part of a major railway route has been shut down in the west of the county, and some villages and tourist resorts have been cut off.

Up to 1.2 metres (4ft) of fresh snow has been recorded in some areas since Thursday.

The authorities say the probability of avalanches is extremely high and widespread.

The railway line that connects Oetzal, close to Innsbruck in Tyrol, and Bludenz in the far west of the country has been shut and is expected to remain closed until Sunday afternoon, says the BBC's Bethany Bell in Vienna.

Well, it’s winter in Europe. Here in much of America, it has been unseasonably warm.

It’s 60 in Washington, DC right now. It’s 57 in New York City. It’s 52 in Pittsburgh.

I expect to see the obligatory story on the news tonight about how warm it is for early January, and then segue into speculation about global warming. That’s how the media handles the weather stories.

Whiners, try taking a look at the recent snow around Cordova, Alaska. Try 20’ mounds everywhere, people literally using a second floor entrance to get in and out of their homes.

I used to ski every year in the Alps. I remember a few years back when the snow was late and european skiers were saying it was the end and it would never snow again in the Alps due to GW and blaming the US for doing nothing about it. Nutty people over there who are scared of their own shadow.

Austrian newspapers will have to find something else to write about now. The snowless winter has been their number one topic lately.

Reminds me of winter in Wisconsin last year.

Seemed like I had to fire up the snow blower a couple/three times every week, and on several occasions a couple of times during a single day.

Thank you Lord that this winter is different.

Here in southern Alaska, we have your snow.....

Snow buries Cordova, Valdez

'According to the National Weather Service, Valdez received 42 inches in the most recent storm, for a total of more than 18 feet this winter and a snow depth of an even 6 feet. Cordova saw about the same, the weather service says, and forecasts for the weekend indicate more is on the way."

Alyeska ski Resort reports 380 inches since October.

And there are still 4 months of winter left!
