Puppies for parole: How rescue dogs are helping convicts rehabilitate and ...

It may sound barking mad but hardened criminals are discovering what softies they are by caring for pooches 24 hours a day.

Forget the usual prison image of chain gangs and razor wire, tough U.S. jailbirds are each being handed a helpless pup to care for in their cells night and day.

In two years, 468 rescue dogs have been placed with families after being trained by inmates in the Missouri Department of Corrections' 'Puppies for Parole' programme.

They teach the dogs, which come from local animal shelters, how to behave and prepare them for adoption - helping their own chances of being released.

George Lombardi, director of the Missouri Department of Corrections, ... said: 'It's really a win-win-win situation. The dogs teach offenders responsibility and compassion, and improve the culture and atmosphere of the facility....

Although the dog has a direct trainer, the whole prison dormitory becomes responsible for the care.

There is nothing more powerful than love to change a man’s heart, and nothing like a puppy to teach a man to love. I say that’s a fantastic idea, so obvious that I can’t believe that nobody thought of it before.

No wonder Mohammad wanted dogs as far away from Muslims as possible, saying they are “unclean” animals.

That is a very astute observation.

Good deal!

When I think of “rescue dogs”, my first impressions is of dogs like this (beautiful photos):

“Roxy” belonged to 1Lt Joshua L. Booth, U.S.M.C., Echo Company, 2nd Bn, 3rd Marines who was K.I.A 10/17/06 in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Since then, Joshua’s Uncle has trained Roxy as a rescue dog. Lately, he’s been visiting military facilities for the wounded and letting Roxy and our troops get acquainted.

Dogs are angels assigned by God to man.

And there's the reason dog is God spelled backward. :)

In Washington State a nun helped a rapist escape after bringing him marijuana. After walking away from his halfway house, he raped the nun and then went to the home of the woman he’d raped that put him in jail and killed her, her 8 year old daughter, and her elderly next door neighbor. This happened about 30 years ago.

Ain’t that sweet! Now when they get out some (not all) will be able to train their pitbulls to protect the drug trade.

Believe it or not, HSUS accepted Vick's offer to do publicity for them as part of his 'rehabilitation'.
