if he got behind Newt he could add his 5 to Newts 23, and along with Rick S. 14, they could beat Romney

Romney may actually be more conservative than Newt. Newt has said repeatedly that he sees FDR as the best president of the 20th century and likens himself to TR. Both were big government Progressives and between them brought about the most egregious of the policies that we now suffer under.

As a historian Newt knows this and that brings enough question about his character and worldview that I don't think I could support him — I may hold my nose to vote like I did with Mccain but the base won't be energized and the contrast between two Statists will be minimal. That is why the Kenyan won the first term.

What we need is a PRINCIPALED conservative like Santorum or Perry. Not a pseudo Conservative like Newt.

BTW I don't really trust the polls but an alternative analysis of the numbers shows that if Newt got out and his votes went to either one of the Ricks — then Romney would be done as well.

Don’t mind the “thanks for bumping the thread” argument, either. It’s a tacit admission that the person doesn’t have the rhetorical courage to engage on threads perceived to be dangerous to that person’s point of view.

I really think most ‘objective’ observers would respectively disagree with you that Mitt is more conservative than Newt. If you look the way they governed that would be a hard case to make. Just saying, I do believe most I know and have heard, would disagree. Rick S. is Dan Qualye at best, and Rick Perry is Fred Thompson all over again. You don’t nap during a campaign. If I am wrong that is fine, I will support them in a general election. I will not be supporting Mitt Romney, and most of my friends will not either. A lot of people think we are blowing smoke, don’t bank on it. Mitt will lose.

Gov. Rick Perry and (fictional) Gov. Robert Ritchie.

The differnce? A little bit of Grecian Formula.

yes, I do blame individual candidates for their actions. Fred has zero chance of being the nominee when he went to South Carolina. I do believe he was there to spoil Mike Huckabee. Yes, it is speculation I know. Many serious thinkers agree that often it is a candidate who waits too late in the process to leave, that often allows a person to get nominated that would not otherwise. I am not alone in that analysis.

For clarification: I never said that Romney was more conservative but that his worldview MAY be. I define Conservatism as using government power only when absolutely necessary and allowing private citizens to meet other needs through the free market.

I don't think Mitt would first approach things from the standpoint of "What can government power do to solve ?" even though he will likely be brought around to that in the end. I believe Newt would use that approach first rather than last.

I may be splitting hairs but I do see a distinction there.

I think either Newt or Mitt would be a disaster for the country, and the Conservative movement, as they would be seen as Conservative even though they are not. That is probably a moot point though, because I think they would each guarantee a second term for the Kenyan Destroyer and we'd all be wearing Mao suits by the end of 2013

You are splitting hairs. It’s ok, I like to do that myself from time to time. I sure hope you don’t think Rick S. or Rick P. can be Obama. There is no hair to split there, it is a big NO. I think you choice is between Newt or Mitt. I choose Newt. The kenyan will be hard to beat either way.

A true conservative would vet each candidate. Obviously, you've not vetted Santorum. HERE START WITH THIS

Liberal Willard = 30%
Conservative NEWT = Strong 23%
Conservative Santorum = 19%

Conservative (Spoiler) Perry = Pathetic 5% but Romney’s best friend if it’s close in South Carolina
