It's actually this simple: does the British government really believe in self-determination or not?

If the British government believes in self-determination, allow the Sottish people to vote on whether or not they want to stay in union with England. And then respect that vote.

And if the British government doesn't believe in self-determination, quit preaching to the rest of the world about people's rights.

Polls suggest support within Scotland for independence ranges from 28%-38%, although pain from ongoing UK spending cuts could bump that up. Might be why they’re pushing for a referendum now. Without the sharing of tax revenues being wed to England becomes less attractive for Scots.

They will get their vote, however, I don't believe the SNP have the right to dictate the terms of the referendum. This issue will affect the whole UK, not just Scotland. The SNP want to time their referendum so that they have to to cook up support for independence, probably by trying to overstep their devolved capabilities in order to provoke a clash with westminster, so that they can point out how the 'evil' english tories are interfering with Scottish 'sovereignty'. They also want to offer the Scots a third option, called 'devolution max', to maximise their chances of winning more powers at the least. I believe the Scots should be offered a straight choice: Yes or No to full independence. The SNP has no right to give the Scots another option that gives the Scottish people an elevated status over other Citizens of the UK than they already now enjoy in a post-devolution Britain...
