Next ice age not likely before 1,500 years: study {partial gag alert}
Reuters ^ | 09 Janaury 2012 | Nina Chestney

High levels of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere mean the next ice age is unlikely to begin for at least 1,500 years, an article in the journal Nature Geoscience said on Monday.

Concentrations of the main gases blamed for global warming reached record levels in 2010 and will linger in the atmosphere for decades even if the world stopped pumping out emissions today, according to the U.N.'s weather agency.

...

There have been at least five ice ages on earth. During ice ages there are cycles of glaciation with ice sheets both advancing and retreating.

Officially, the earth has been in an interglacial, or warmer period, for the last 10,000 to 15,000 years, and estimates vary on how long such periods last.

...

The causes of ice ages are not fully understood but concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, changes in the earth's orbit around the sun, and the movement of tectonic plates are all thought to contribute.

Well, that settles it - I am now a proponent of global warming (or climate change, whichever term is more politically correct).

However, it seems funny to me that we don't know what causes ice ages, but we know with absolute certainty what prevents them (carbon dioxide in the atmosphere), even though man hasn't been around long enough to prevent the previous ice ages, or cause them to end!!!

Just more junk science. If we prevented an ice age, then we have prevented the deaths of untold millions.

It seems a bit odd that people who cannot accurately predict what the weather will do next week, and sometimes even tomorrow, think they can predict it for 1,500 years.

Especially since they admit they don’t understand what causes ice ages in the first place.

Well, considering that the Ice Age brought about an Ice Sheet over 1 mile high in most of North America, Asia and Europe, 1,500 years is too damn close.

These “environmentalists” don’t follow a science - they follow a religious cult.

This is not a new theory — but, other articles point out that we're over 1,000 years overdue for an ice age. According to that theory, the greenhouse gases released over the past 8,000 years’ first from agriculture, then, more recently from industrialization, have kept the ice age at bay.

Clearly, this would be a good thing. Especially, here in Canada (and Alaska), which was covered by miles-thick ice for many thousands of years.

Here's an article that claims we could avoid the next 5 ice ages, by burning up all the fossil fuels on the planet:

Oh...man....
Just as the planet was about to rid itself of that pesky human race, via that massive ice age “scheduled” for a few years from now, those damn humans have screwed it up and could be around for another 1500 years.....
Now What?!?!

Hmm, I wonder if that's what Obama was talking about when he stated the Earth would begin to heal itself under his divine guidance???

What ever creature is crawling around on this rock 1,500 years from now, will still be trying to pay down Obama and his democrat’s debt, so they will probably look forward to an ice age.

Considering that an ice age would probably result in several billion people dying from starvation makes global warming the greatest boon to mankind EVER.

Actually I'm more concerned about an ice age this upcoming year and whether I should add extra insulation in my attic or not.

The problem with Ice Ages is that they just happen, the Earth was warming quite nicely 12,000 years ago and then the Younger Dryas and a 1000 years of real bad weather then 7000 years of good weather with assorted nasties spaced at intervals.

Reminds me of an old Polish woman's joke, "The first child can come at any time the second takes nine months."

My thoughts exactly. If our emissions can make the next glacial period even a little less cold, a little less deadly, then our evil ways will have been worth it.

Don’t worry.....ice ages start when it snos so much that it all doesn’t melt the following year. Then it just keeps getting deeper year after year.

Look at the snows in Alaska this year. Record breakers.

Yeah, I’m adding insulation in my attic as well, but not because of cold temps. It was 105 degrees here for weeks on end last summer. Got to get those bills down somehow. But it will help in the winter as well.

Wait til the scammers see the hidden gold mine : something happened 1500 years ago that is causing our current global warming, Now they have decades of grants to get to figure out what it was. We can figure out the significance of the findings later.

Best news I've heard all day.

Exactly.

Although I think this is bunk, how exactly is delaying an ice age 1500 years a bad thing?

Does the author have something against Canada, the upper USA, and Northern Eurasia?
