DISCLAIMER — The maps and lists show events which have been located by the USGS and contributing agencies within the last 7 days. They should not be considered to be complete lists of all events M2.5+ in the US and adjacent areas and especially should not be considered to be complete lists of all events M4.5+ in the world. The World Data Center for Seismology, Denver (a part of the USGS National Earthquake Information Center) continues to receive data from observatories throughout the world for several months after the events occurred, and using those data, adds new events and revises existing events in later publications. For a description of these later publications and the data available, see Scientific Data.

That was my first thought when I saw ‘Sumatra.’ Hopefully no major tsunami, or if there is, there’d be plenty of warning to all who might be affected. That was one looooooooong, horrific day in ‘04.

That it was. Better warning systems in place today, though.

18 miles is pretty deep, I thought... The crust is only 3 to 6 miles thick.

Isn’t Godzillas fault located closer to Japan?
To: dangus
Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep. In general, the term "deep-focus earthquakes" is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km. All earthquakes deeper than 70 km are localized within great slabs of shallow lithosphere that are sinking into the Earth's mantle. Per info on USGS site - 70 km is 43.495 mi (yes, I had to look it up - didn't do so hot in high school metrics class!)

I think the USA should buy Sumatra from the peoples, bulldoze it, and turn it into a greenway.
Afterall, that’s what they do here with flood plain and storm ravaged locations.

Thanks,
That's some pretty significant S-waves! Looks like the surface of our little orb was vibrating up and down pretty good during that one. It's certainly not helping with all the volcanoes stirring in that part of the world (Seven Indonesian Volcanoes on Alert). Final 5+ for 2011 below.
