That was my first thought when I saw ‘Sumatra.’ Hopefully no major tsunami, or if there is, there’d be plenty of warning to all who might be affected. That was one looooooooong, horrific day in ‘04.

Sumatra (extra bold) always my first choice of java. Hopefully, coffee bean crop has been spared.

That it was. Better warning systems in place today, though.

18 miles is pretty deep, I thought... The crust is only 3 to 6 miles thick.

Isn’t Godzilla’s fault located closer to Japan?

Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep. In general, the term "deep-focus earthquakes" is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km. All earthquakes deeper than 70 km are localized within great slabs of shallow lithosphere that are sinking into the Earth's mantle.

Per info on USGS site - 70 km is 43.495 mi (yes, I had to look it up - didn't do so hot in high school metrics class!)

Felt a little shake here in Maine. (I suppose it could be Chris Christie in New Hampshire)

I think the USA should buy Sumatra from the peoples, bulldoze it, and turn it into a greenway.

Afterall, that’s what they do here with flood plain and storm ravaged locations.

Thanks,

That's some pretty significant S-waves! Looks like the surface of our little orb was vibrating up and down pretty good during that one. It's certainly not helping with all the volcanoes stirring in that part of the world (Seven Indonesian Volcanoes on Alert). Final 5+ for 2011 below.
