He endorsed Gov. Romney last time.

On the one hand, it was Romney or McCain.
On the other hand, he'd have been better off just keeping his mouth shut.

No it wasn't, DeMint got behind Romney in 2006 when Romney was still governor and helped push him to run by serving on his exploratory committee. DeMint was there at the beginning and through to the end, he wanted Mitt Romney

DeMint was his national party co-chairman during his presidential run.

Romney came in 4th in S.C. during the 2008 primary. The numbers were:

John McCain 147,733 33.15% 18
Mike Huckabee 132,990 29.84% 6
Fred Thompson 69,681 15.63% 0
Mitt Romney 68,177 15.3% 0
