Newt Gingrich: I Crossed The Line (Bain Criticism)

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Newt Gingrich signaled Wednesday that he believes his criticism of Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital is a mistake — and that he’s created an impression that he was echoing Democratic rhetoric.

Gingrich conceded the problem when pressed by a Rick Santorum supporter at a book-signing here Wednesday.

“I’m here to implore one thing of you. I think you’ve missed the target on the way you’re addressing Romney’s weaknesses. I want to beg you to redirect and go after his obvious disingenuous about his conservatism and lay off the corporatist versus the free market. I think it’s nuanced,” Dean Glossop, an Army Reservist from Inman, S.C., said.

Good...electing an attack dog who would go after the dems for revenge or otherwise once in office sounds like a good plan to me.

He keeps making me sad.

How could he not? He's a nitwit.

Every politician makes gaffes at one point or another. Which one hasn’t? That doesn’t mean that it’s preferable to nominate Mitt Hussein “I like being able to fire people” Obomney for the Oval Office.

This just sounds like a campaign strategy...Now, Newt can distance himself from the attacks that are being leveled against Bain and move on to other points. The attacks will still have an effect with Romney having to answer questions about Bain instead of what he wants the talking points to be.

Who knows if it will work?

Newt’s playing the game..and the candidates as he thinks the game should go....He’s doing exactly what he said he would do..an unconvential campaign. I won’t underestimate his game plans...and what he carries out...and will give it time to see where the plays go....He’s on the move and I like what’ he’s doing.

That’s the problem with stoopid attack. He might say sorry for missing on the rug but the odor still lingers.

I am leaning towards Santorum, but I realize that even W beats all of these guys by a mile.

I'm hoping Santorum can keep gaining support and have good showing in SC and Florida. He's my favorite of those left, but I'm also beginning to be resigned that we won't have a great presidential candidate and am turning some interest to the possible gains in the Senate. I think we'll need good control of the House and Senate no matter who the next president is.

And only Congress can repeal Obamacare and send it to the president for signature.

Perry explicitly said (to Hannity) that he is NOT against venture capitalism, just the “vulture” type that leaves employees jobless and eliminates their pensions.

Thats a worthless nuance. Somebody is always going to get laid off; otherwise how do you reallocate capital?

This whole line of attack by "Republicans" is obscene and idiotic. The Stupid Party.

Only two people on this thread actually read the article.

Once again, the Political headline is untrue.

Newt didn't apologize for anything and did not say that he crossed the line.

Newt laid the blame at Obama's feet.

There are a very few Romney supporters left on FR. The criticism of Newt was not support for Romney.

It was support for capitalism and it isn’t conservative to adopt the lamguage and class warfare of the left.

This stuff wasn’t a gaffe. This was poor judgment.

I am aware of what a gaffe is. I can forgive gaffes. I wish that was all it was.

Gotta appreciate the irony of FReepers who rail against the duplicitous nature of the MSM, yet ineluctably fall for the MSM’s tricks every time.

This whole thing is a Politico hit-piece spinning Gingrich’s comment entirely out of context.

Newt trying to rescue his chances in South Carolina won’t be easy to do, now that they have seen him attacking from the left. Strange times!

A gaffe is when you unintentionally say what you really think.

once in office

And that is where your argument falls. Gingrich [#4 in Ia, #4 in NH] won't win in the general election, even if he does manage to win the nomination.

Additionally, your comment would seem to approve retribution and retaliation, assuming Gingrich did get in office. Is that the kind of presidency we need?

The Democrats and Obama have known about Bain for a long time and planned to use it against Romney closer to the general election .... I am watching the video now.

Ding. Ding. Ding. The aforementioned sickening video on the Chris Matthews propaganda show (masquerading as news).

Chrissy had to have gotten permission from the DNC to release this now instead of waiting, since Newt let the cat out of the bag. They will call this strategy 'Occupy_Whatever'.

Politico misquoted and lied about Gingrich's comments from a book signing, and the political discussion to follow is full of immoral, illiterate idiots. What else is new from Romney's dishonest, socialist and government-linked business supporters?
