Man shot in foot during alleged Eddington break-in faces felony burglary charge(ME)

EDDINGTON, Maine — A man who broke into a home on Riverside Drive on Saturday afternoon and was shot in the foot by the homeowner is now behind bars on a charge of felony burglary, Deputy Chief Troy Morton of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said.

Darren Seidell, 30, a local transient originally from Florida, was discovered in the home of Peter and Carol Roderick when she returned home from grocery shopping at around 2:45 p.m., the deputy chief said.

“Peter was on the property but in another building,” Morton said. “When his wife came home he went to help carry in the groceries and they heard something upstairs. He confronted him.”

While heading upstairs, Peter Roderick told his wife to call police.

Peter Roderick, who said on Sunday that he has a concealed weapons permit, used a 9 mm handgun to shoot Seidell, who was wearing a ski mask, in the foot, Morton said.

“He was chased across the road” and first went left running behind one house, then circled around and entered a second house, 491 Riverside Drive, directly across the street from the Roderick’s, the deputy chief said.

Maine State Police and Penobscot County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene in force and searched the area around neighboring homes on Riverside Drive, which is also known as Route 178.

The family that lives at the house where Seidell was at, who said he had been staying there a couple days with a visiting relative, “waved us right in and brought us to him,” Morton said.

Seidell was removed from the house around 3:15 p.m. by an ambulance crew and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he was treated with an armed guard nearby. He was brought to the jail at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, a jail official said Sunday morning.

Seidell, who was wanted for two outstanding warrants, “has a long criminal history in Maine,” Morton said. He was charged with felony burglary and was being held in jail on $20,000 cash bail. Seidell faces a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $20,000, if convicted.

He also has a conviction for failing to appear after bailed, which is why his bail is so high, Morton said.

Seidell has numerous convictions since 2006 including for aggravated criminal trespass, criminal mischief, terrorizing and assault to harassment by telephone, marijuana possession, theft, operarting without a license, violating protective orders and violating conditions of his release, according to prior court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News.

Peter Roderick, who runs the Dragon Forge blacksmith shop out of his house, said on Sunday that he and his wife are doing OK. Their home was wrapped in yellow police tape after the shooting and the Sheriff’s Department’s mobile crime unit was parked in their driveway while investigators collected evidence.

“We’re fine,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of calls. A lot of people were worried about us.” CORRECTION:
