Mondays fatal shooting of an alleged burglary suspect inside a South Everett home has elicited a tidal wave of emotion about personal protection, frustration over property crime and, naturally, the disdain for self-defense with firearms.
At last check Tuesday, as this column was being prepared, KOMOs on-line report about the shooting had nearly 400 reader reactions, and about three dozen more at the KIRO site and quite a few on the Everett Herald site. There would have been more, presumably, had the Seattle P-I.com and KING opened their comment sections. The Seattle Times hardly mentioned the incident in their regional roundup.
As reported by this column, there are about 350,000 active concealed pistol licenses in Washington, but the number of CPLs doesnt matter in the Everett situation, because this shooting occurred inside a private residence. One does not need a permit to keep a gun for personal protection in their home or business under this states statutes.
He murdered another human and should be in prison himself. GUNS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He should have left the house, called the cops and let them handle it. RevzLove
Just so everyone understands this, shooting in self-defense is not "murder." It is justifiable homicide. But as typified by "RevzLove's" comment, that distinction doesn't matter to the gun-ban extremists. There is also no duty to retreat, although that notion has been simply upheld by court rulings; it is not specifically spelled out in state statute, though there is legislation, as noted by this column earlier, designed to fix that.
As noted in this column, it does not take much to bring out the extremes when the subject is guns or gun rights, or even gun rights organizations. The KOMO comments section is sprinkled with some gems:

This is barely worth my anger.
I’ll never accept or follow a law that states I have to flee from my property, or flee period, and let the gov handle it if someone with bad intent and any reason person’s view of a potential that they will put me in harm, mortal or otherwise. If you catch someone breaking into your house, you have every reason to suspect they may be armed, and would use lethal force if confronted. You also have every reason to demand they leave, or remain absolutely still (while you call police), with threat of death if they do not heed your words, whatever your directions are.
Break into my home or apt, you deal with ALL and ANY of the consequences, within my good own personal judgement.
It may result in you having to live in a non-extraditable country, which is probably a crap hole, but at least you won’t be a piece of slave trash like the rest of humanity has decided they want to consider themselves as.
Those comments are not surprising, South Everett is in Seattle Leftist Liberal Land.

In other words, better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.
If a criminal enters your "castle" and winds up shot or killed, NOBODY can touch the homeowner. Not a jaundiced prosecutor. Not a ambulance chasing lawyer. Not a family member suing and crying racism. NOBODY.
This is as it should be.
A bunch of ass sniffing libtards that would use violence in any Occupy protest but for someone to defend themselves, they scream bloody murder...... I wish they'd go to hell and stay there.
Just north of, and part of, the bleeding heart enviro-whacko liberal cesspool/sewer that is Seattle....and those words describe, for the most part, the Northwestern section of Wa. State also.
Washington State does not have Castle Doctrine per se. It is even more conservative than that. ANYWHERE that you are legally able to be, you can use deadly force to stop an assault, robbery, or a felony on yourself, family, or strangers.
All of these liberal’s comments are for naught.
Truly, leftists prove themselves to be my mortal enemy more and more with each passing day....
Almost went to jail in WA in 86 for just being armed and wanting to shoot a junkie breaking into my Jeep. WA personal and property defense laws suck!
Good reason not to live in Washington, besides many people might think that you live in Washington, DC and are brain dead.
