Attorney general: Mississippi may order nationwide manhunt

Jackson, Mississippi (CNN) -- Mississippi's attorney general said Thursday that the state may have to issue a nationwide manhunt after four pardoned murderers left jail and "hit the road running."

"We'll catch 'em. It's just a matter of time," Attorney General Jim Hood told CNN.

The four were among nearly 200 convicted criminals to whom Gov. Haley Barbour granted clemency or a pardon in a final act before leaving office this week.

The governor's actions have set off a legal firestorm in Mississippi.

A judge issued a temporary injunction Wednesday forbidding the release of any more prisoners. And the process of releasing 21 other inmates has been halted, said Hood, who believes the former governor put people at risk and sought the court order.

The pardons include the four convicted murderers and a convicted armed robber who were released Sunday. The five now must contact prison officials on a daily basis as their fate is adjudicated, but their whereabouts are unknown, Hood said.

A court hearing on the matter will be held January 23.

Hood said the state cannot issue an arrest warrant for the five who were released because they have not committed a crime.

A governor grants clemency or pardons and somehow someone got a stay against those same acts? The governor does in fact have this power, what can be their argument against it?

A governor is not a King. All his power is given to him by The People. And if The People don't like how a specific person uses that power they can nullify his actions.

They're pardoned. They're not paroled. Since when did pardoned ex-cons not have the right to "hit the ground running?" Doesn't a pardon pretty much erase all further consequences of a conviction?

A “nationwide manhunt” for people who’ve been pardoned.

Must be part of that new NDAA.

That sounds like a good case for putting a hold on the pardons...

I am happy Hood or somebody is trying to do something about this. Hood is a true hero, and pro-criminal Barbour a fat bloated P.O.S.! He’s an evil, evil man. Glad Hood is trying to remedy the situation and round up these criminals. Barbour threw innocent citizens under the bus, and he didn’t follow the rules before he granted pardons because that is how fat and lazy he is. ha ha. screw you Barbour. Barbour is only encouraging vigilante justice by his outrageous tactics.

I agree, The State Attorney Jim Hood is the only statewide elected democrat and he has a past record of working to turn things to his own and the democrats political advantage and to me he doesn’t have any credibility and is just doing what he does best, attack Republicans and help his friends.
I also agree and have no problem with the pardon of those who have served their sentence but would really like to have an explanation of why those who have not finished their sentence were pardoned and at this time I can’t think of one I could agree with.

The reality that Barbour cannot avoid is that he failed to follow the law when enacting many of these pardons.

“Hood is a true hero”

You can’t be from Mississippi, Jim Hood is for Jim Hood, his trial lawer buddies, and the democrat party and will jump at any opportunity to advance his career, save or enrich his buddies, or to advance the democrat agenda, and to be able to do this while causing a Republican problems would make it that much better. I’m not defending Governor Barbour, I can’t think of any proper reason to pardon those who had not served their term and also surprised that the Governor would not dot all the Is and cross all the Ts but jim hood as a hero???? jim hood is a despicable opportunist.

We have imprisoned some judges and lawyers, they were among jim hoods buddies and contributors. jim hood is a democrat and so are his buddies. As a resident of Mississippi who has traveled most of my life and has read a lot of papers and in general keeps up with current events I have no reason to believe that Mississippi is either more nor less corrupt than other states and I do not believe that Governor Barbour is corrupt and I do not believe that he traded pardons for money, services or goods. On the other hand I’m always suspicious of jim hood.

Yes, but it is so easy to fulfill that requirement and it’s a process that has been done so very many times.

Of course perhaps someone screwed up. It’s always possible.
