DENVER Sen. Angela Giron on the first day of the new legislative session Wednesday introduced a modified version of a bill that failed last year proposing to afford illegal immigrants in-state college tuition rates.
The Pueblo Democrats revamped proposal, SB15, mirrors last years bill in that it would allow Colorado high school graduates who have been in the country much of their lives and are pursuing legal citizenship to attend state colleges at the resident rate, but would not grant them state College Opportunity Fund dollars. None of us want to create an underclass of people, Giron said. The state cant afford that, and this country cant afford a permanent underclass. Theyre here. Lets make the most of it.
The new bill differs from last year's because it includes an option for colleges to refuse to participate. Giron said the caveat was added to appeal to Republicans who opposed the plan last year.
Giron said growing numbers of Hispanics some who could benefit from her idea are a resource to the state and the country, and a powerful voting block
